Born in Clarksburg, VVA to the late Dessie and Alfred Layfield, Dale proudly served the United States in the 1st Marine Division of the United States Marine Corp from 1941 to 1945 and again from 1949 to 1952 as a rifle marksman and flare gunner. He was awarded many service medals and was trained in criminal investigation and identification and received commendations for good conduct and the honorable service lapel button. He participated in the occupation and defense of Guadalcanal in 1942 and the offensive and defensive operations at Cape Gloucester, New Britain in 1944.

Dale also reenlisted back into the Marines and became a Reservist serving from 1954 to 1957 and again from 1959 to 1962.
Because of his love and concern for the people of the community, Dale and his wife Pauline "Polly" who passed away in December 2011, started the Uniontown Police Station in their living room. Dale remained police Chief until his retirement in 1983. He stayed very active in the police department and the community after his retirement.

Dale was a kind and gentle man, who touched many lives and was loved and respected by everyone. The family is forever grateful to Dale's nephew; Andrew, who lived with Dale to ensure his independence, enabling him to live in the home he shared with Polly.

Uncle Dale will be greatly missed by his niece Gina (Rod) DiPaulo, great-nieces Jennifer (Matt) Becca, great nephews Anthony, Andrew, Aaron and his great-great niece Jordan.

Family will receive friends at the Catavolos Funeral Home 3653 W. Market St., Fairlawn, Thursday, April 12, from 2-4 and 6-8pm, where funeral services will be held Friday, April 13, at 11am, officiated by Reverend Jack Coontz.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made in Dale's name to Great Lakes Caring Hospice Foundation 1530 W. Market St. Akron OH 44313.
Entombment will be at Rose Hill Burial Park.

"I knew Dale from when he used to run the department from his house. He was always ready to respond anytime day or night. He pretty much took care of that..." Dan Fitzgerald (Cape Coral, FL)
