Alice influenced so many people in so many ways it is hard to express. She was the embodiment of "being there for someone". That connection remains in heart and mind for all of us who love her dearly. As graduate students, this included training in research, thinking, and writing. But what we really received was her example of opening our hearts, really listening, and giving of ourselves. As a teacher, she had infinite patience and total generosity. I remember arriving at Honolulu airport in 1974 after 6 months in Java and Japan with $1.50 in my pocket and a huge suitcase. I called her on the pay phone from the terminal and she said "I'll come get you." I think she loved people who took chances, reached out, and explored the unknown. Her house was a place of stability and of family for the diverse graduate students who were coming and going across the world. We were learning new ways of communication within a context of the study of many cultures. There was always room for more at the table. May we try to pay forward her generosity and aloha. And may her presence always be with us.
