Aunt Al was a woman well ahead of her time. She was a strong, driven, independent, career woman during a period when it was not fashionable. She served as a role model for not only the women she instructed but women of today as well. While I know she loved and was proud of her career and all the nurses she impacted. She also had a deep love for her family especially her mother, sisters and all of her nieces and nephews. Aunt Al treated all of us like her own sons and daughters. I will always remember Aunt Al at family gatherings, her intelligence, her laugh, her playing the piano, her decorating her dining room at Christmas and always making sure Santa had left a little something for all of her nieces and nephews. I'm sure Heaven has a special place for her.

Although I knew "Aunt Al" mostly through her neice, Sue, with whom she resided in later years, I had the pleasure of meeting her about six years ago, I remember her as a petite, reserved lady with fresh coiffured hair, dressed in a tiny pin-striped suit and "neat as a pin". She was extremely proud of her background and accomplishments in the field of health and one could quickly sense that her work was a labor of love. Thinking of the family, sharing your sadness, and wishing you the healing that only time can bring.

I am a graduate of the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1968. I have worked 20+ years on the history of the hospital and the school. I can not begin to tell you of the impact this wonderful, caring and knowledgeable person had on the lives of so many nursing students and staff throughout her years of affiliation with the hospital. I was fortunate enough to spend an afternoon with Miss Akehurst about 10 years ago and she so impressed me with her concern and love of nursing and all whom she had encountered over the years both at Lutheran Hospital and the University of Maryland schools of nursing. Her family has my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy. We have all been blessed.

Though I did not know Alice personally, she seemed to have touched many lives. No doubt she will be missed. May you find joy in the memories of her and comfort in the God of tender mercies.
