Alice Barton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 10, 2012.

Alice T. Barton age 84, was born in London, England, to Robert and Florence Telfer. She passed June 9, 2012 peacefully while surrounded by her family.

In the course of her youth, Alice survived the bombing campaign known as the Battle of Britain, commonly recognized as "The Blitz", during World War II. Through the Liberation of Paris, Alice and her father traveled by tandem bicycle to Dumfries, Scotland from London, England. Alice was vivacious, full of life and had an unyielding penchant for adventure.

Alice had an appreciation of nature and the outdoors, a remarkable sense of humor and possessed many creative talents. She was an accomplished seamstress and artist. Alice was the youngest woman to be appointed as Wardrobe Mistress for the Theatre Royal Stratford in London.

An extraordinary woman who was always ready to help or listen in times of need, Alice lived to spend time with her family.

Her favorite past times included cooking, baking and sewing for the family. She captured images of her life through her oil paintings. Alice and her husband, Ray, shared a love for walking along the beach, viewing the changing of the leaves and camping with the family in Murphy, North Carolina.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years Ray J. Barton, her sons Peter T. Barton, Paul D. Barton, Perry A. Barton and Jamie A. Barton; her daughter-in-laws, Beth Barton, Cynthia Barton and Maria Barton; her grandchildren, Christopher and Heather Barton, Robby and Lisa Barton, Phillip Barton and Kevin Holder, Cheyenne Barton, Destri Barton and Kaily Barton; her great-grandchildren Landon Barton, Jaden Barton, and Lily Barton; as well as extended family in England.

At the family's request, no service will be held.

This woman was the strongest person I've ever met, my grandma was outgoing, she loved to be outside, she loved everyone, she was blunt-in the harshest, most honest way. It has been one year since she passed and it feels like it was just yesterday, I know that she is looking down on us thinking, what happened? She had the biggest expectations for everyone of us in her family, (that family is huge, try fitting all of us at the dinner table, it doesn't work!!!). My grandma, painted me, my sister, my cousin, uncle, and many other painting that are worth more than anything in the world!! Well basically, my scattered thoughts all sum up to me trying to say, grandma I miss you, I wish u were still here, it's not the same anymore.

My grandma was not the most perfect person, but she was perfect to me. She had her flaws, as everyone does. But she was my guardian Angel. She was always there to talk to, about whatever. She always had the most interesting stories, like her green nail polish! She was one of the most kind hearted person a granddaughter could ask for. My grandma & grandpa were, and are, the backbone of the Bartons. She taught me to cook, inspiring me to pursue culinary Arts. When I become rich, Im going to open "Alice's Restaraunt", just for you grandma. Im going to have sweet & sour pork, pancit, beef stew, meatloaf, all of YOUR recipes, in memory of you. I love you grandma. I know you are watching over me. You have wings now, so go fly. Explore places you have never been before, but never forget to come back home to the family every once in awhile. I know I'm going to make you proud!! LUV YA - XOXO <3

Alice and Ray's house was a refuge from the "real" world. Their son Jamie and I have been close friends since the early 80s. Alice used to call me Alec and I loved that. She was my mother in the alternate reality that was "Jamie's house". Sweet, smart, creative and amazing. I still feel like she's with us for sure.
