Alice Lynette Blanchard, 92, of Victoria Texas died in her sleep on Thursday, March 13th, 2014.
Mrs. Blanchard was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on February 26, 1922 and lived all of her youth in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At an early age, she became a flutist with the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra, rapidly advancing to first chair. "Lynette" attended the Western Michigan University Campus School graduating in 1939. She graduated from the School of Music at the University of Michigan in 1943. While at Michigan, she was the first chair flutist in the University Orchestra under the direction of her life-long friend Dr. William D Revelli. During her college summers she taught flute at the renowned Interlocken Music Camp.
On October 9, 1943, Lynette married Lieutenant Raywood Helmer Blanchard. They were stationed at various U.S. military bases while he completed his training as a B-24 bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps. Mr. Blanchard, an international patent attorney, was a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School.
Mrs. Blanchard lived much of her adult life in Kalamazoo, teaching flute at Western Michigan University and for 30 years at Kalamazoo College. In addition to raising 5 children and serving as principle flutist with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra for 25 years, she became an avid golfer.
In 1983 she and her husband retired to a golf community in McAllen, Texas. There, she was the first chair flutist and president of the McAllen Town Band and continued to play golf until the age of 88.
She moved to the Homewood Residence in Victoria, Texas in 2010. In Victoria, she found her place in the Crossroads Community Band. Always active in the Methodist Church, she was a member of the Victoria First United Methodist Church, playing the piano for her Sunday school class on any Sunday when she wasn't fishing with her son in Rockport, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 55 years, Raywood. She is survived by her loving children: Carol L. Bachmeyer, Gay Blanchard Pleune (Scott), William R. Blanchard (Pat), Bette Blanchard Cruikshank (Kirk) and Eric Alan Blanchard (Anne). She will also be missed by her 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Victoria, on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 2:00 PM.
Memorial gifts may be made to Victoria Symphony Society Endowment Fund.
