Alidor Lowell Vanderport passed away on February 17, 2014 with family at his side. He was born to Clara and Oscar Vanderport on February 16, 1927 in Superior, Wisconsin and was the youngest of their four children. Alidor spent his childhood growing up in Superior, WI during the Great Depression. He was shaped by this experience as he learned the value of hard-work and independence. Alidor Lowell Vanderport passed away on February 17, 2014 with family at his side.
He was born to Clara and Oscar Vanderport on February 16, 1927 in Superior, Wisconsin and was the youngest of their four children.
Alidor spent his childhood growing up in Superior, WI during the Great Depression. He was shaped by this experience as he learned the value of hard-work and independence.
Alidor enlisted in the Navy in 1944 where is served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. After returning home, he met his future wife, Elizabeth Stachelski. They were married on August 11, 1948 in Superior.
Using his GI Bill, he then went on to the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in just 2 years. He then earned his Master's degree from the University of Iowa.
After returning to their home state of Wisconsin, Alidor began teaching US Government at Randolph High School thus launching his career as an educator.
In 1955, Alidor and Elizabeth moved to Milwaukee where he began teaching political science and economics and Milwaukee Area Technical College. Alidor later became Dean of Students at the college and helped to shape its transition to a collegiate campus. Later on, as the Director of Student Affairs he continued to be actively involved in student life at the college and loved the interaction he had with his students. Alidor retired from MATC in 1989.
Alidor is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth and their four children; Valerie (Brian Hollingshead); Jefferson (Maureen Massey); Greg and Craig. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Zachary, Sarah, Libby, and Olivia and two great-grandchildren; Cylas and Faethe.
Alidor and Elizabeth moved to Washington State in February, 2013.
A funeral Mass celebrating Alidor's life will be held February 22, 2014 at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Everett, Washington. Burial will be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to NAMI, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, an organization that Alidor gave years of volunteer service to.
