Allan T. Abess Jr. born May 4, 1928 in Long Island New York. Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 18, 2011 after a brief illness. Allan's parents Allan T. Abess and M. Irene (Tootie) Abess moved with their infant son to Miami in 1929. Allan graduated from the Georgia Military College in 1946 then graduated from Emory University. Allan served in the Korean War as a Master Sergent. When he returned home in 1950 he started as a teller at City National Bank in Coral Gables. He retired 50 years later as President, Chief Operating Officer, and Vice Chairman of the Board. City National Bank was a family business. Allan's uncle Leonard Abess Sr. founded the bank in 1946. Allan's father retired from his store Abess Ltd on Miracle Mile and became the facilities manager for City National Bank. One of Allan's greatest honors was to train his cousin and best friend Leonard Abess Jr. "He guided me through every decision including what to order for lunch" his cousin Leonard said. "He was loved by employees and customers alike. He managed by walking around. I never worried what went on in back of the store. Allan protected me ever since I was a kid."
As a young man Allan enjoyed racing sports cars and flying airplanes, he also served in the civil air patrol during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Allan met the love of his life Joan Edwards at a friends home in 1963 and they married in 1965. They shared a love for sailing and were members of Coral Reef Yacht Club where Allan served as Commodore 1986 to 1987. Allan was a trustee of the Alma Jennings Foundation and a board member of South Miami Hospital where he served as Treasurer. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Joan Edwards Abess RN BSN and his son Allan T. Abess III. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the University of Miami School of Nursing & Health Studies. P.O. Box 248153, Coral Gables Florida 33124.
