Allene Warrick Adams, age 98, peacefully departed this life on December 4, 2009. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Julia Newman and Constance Walker and by her husband, Albert. Allene was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and moved with her family to Cleveland, Ohio in 1916. She attended Cleveland Public Schools, graduating from Central High School. After graduation, she attended Cleveland Community College. In 1930, Allene married Albert Adams and they had one child, Marguerite. Allene was an employee of Ohio Bell Telephone Company for 33 years, retiring in 1976. She also taught evening classes in dressmaking and millinery for the Cleveland Adult Education Program for a number of years. Allene moved from Cleveland to Phoenix in December 1975 where she became a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church. She was active in the Women's Guild and became a church elder. In September 2003, Allene was honored by the church who recognized her as a Matriarch of Southminster. Allene was also a member of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, the Telephone Pioneers of America and a lifetime member of the NAACP. Allene was an accomplished seamstress and gourmet cook. Her hobbies were oil painting, furniture refinishing and crossword puzzles. Allene was an avid reader, being a weekly visitor to her neighborhood library and reading one or more books a week. Allene will be remembered for her dedication and love of family, a true friend to many and a faithful member of her church. Allene is survived by her daughter, Dr. Marguerite A. Dickey; brother, Leon Elliott; grandson, Thomas A. Dickey; granddaughter, Leslie Cloud; great grandchildren, Joshua and Alexa Cloud; niece, Dr. Kathy Newman; nephew, Maurice Newman; and many cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 1923 East Broadway Road, Phoenix, AZ 85040. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the United Negro College Fund, 8260 Willow Oaks corporate Drive, Fairfax, VA 22031.
