Alma Huffman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2017.

Alma Austin Huffman, 97, of Bellaire, Texas, died peacefully at Houston Methodist Hospital on January 15 with two of her sons at her bedside. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home at 12800 Westheimer Road in Houston. Visitation will be observed beginning at 1:00 p.m. followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Forest Park Cemetery. The Rev. Michael Fry of Grace Presbyterian Church will officiate at the services.

Alma was born on January 29, 1919 to Mamie and Harry Austin in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Within two years the family moved to Winter Garden, Florida, where many dear family members and friends live today. In 1946, she married John Hubert Huffman of Brownsville, Texas and they moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana where their first two sons were born. John's job in the oil patch soon took the family to Monroe, where two more sons were born, and then to Lafayette, Louisiana. Alma and John's last move together was to Victoria, Texas where John retired. John died in 1984 and Alma moved to Houston in 1989.

Throughout her life, Alma was active in the church, PTA and garden clubs. She loved to sew clothes for herself, her family, her friends and charity fundraisers. Since she moved to Houston, Alma was an active member in Grace Presbyterian Church. She also served as a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and its annual fundraising gala. Alma assumed the responsibility of family historian and she regaled the family with stories and shared photographs at every opportunity. She forged life-long friendships every place she lived.

Survivors include three sons, Michail of Redmond, WA, Gary and his wife Jodie of Lafayette, LA and Bill and his wife Carla of New Braunfels, TX; three grandchildren, Mandi (husband Stephen) Legnon, Jason Huffman and Jarod (wife Lacey) Huffman; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley Legnon, Kimberley Legnon, Braden Legnon, Macy Huffman, Alec Gotro, Cameron Huffman and Evan Huffman; one brother, Douglas Austin of Winter Garden, FL; and six loving nieces and their families residing in FL and GA.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband John, her son John Keith, her sister Eva Walker and her parents Harry and Mamie Austin.

In lieu of flowers, Alma requested that donations be made to one of her favorite charities: Ronald McDonald House Houston, 1907 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, Grace Presbyterian Church, 10221 Ella Lee Lane, Houston, TX 77042 or Father Flanagan's Boys' Home, 14100 Crawford St., Boys Town, NE 68010.

I will greatly miss Alma. She was always such a joy to share stories with as she'd in turn tell you about her own experience and how to best approach a situation, who else to turn to now? I'm just so happy she was able to meet my daughter :) I will remember her fondly. RIP Mrs. Huffman.

My precious Aunt Alma was and will remain a wonderful influence in my life; she always had time for me. She was a beautiful and accomplished seamstress and, when I got more serious about sewing, her help was invaluable. She shared everything she could with me. She always had a smile, lots of love, and if I needed it, great advice. We were in touch by letter or phone several times a month and that's going to leave a big hole, impossible to fill. I will miss her terribly - she will always be loved by me.

Mike, Gary, and Bill- I don't need to tell you about your mom - you've always known what a beautiful person in whose precious care you grew to manhood.
love & blessings, Sandra

I will greatly miss my precious Aunt Alma. She has been beloved by me for my entire life. She was my hero, and conducted her life in a lovely and outstanding manner. We faithfully corresponded, since I was a little girl. Aunt Alma was a delightfully talented seamstress, and made my cousin Karen and I, many beautifully crafted doll clothing, growing up. My mother, Mary Huffman, dearly loved her sister-in-law, Alma. My dad was Alan Huffman. Aunt Alma was always there to give me advice, as life's storms came. She had such wisdom.

I lost my precious and only son, John Leigh, age 35 in 2015. Then she lost her beloved Keith. We were able to console each other greatly. I vividly recall my four boy cousins coming to visit in Tucson, and camping out in the back yard. I always remembered Mike, Keith, Gary, and Billy. I had a major crush on Mike at the time. I was 14. He taught me to dance my first dance, to "Sherry Baby", and we played tennis. My mom told me that we were not "kissing cousins". We did, however, exchange letters for a time.

Aunt Alma kept me updated on the family, as we corresponded over time, and sometimes spoke on the phone. I do not know whom could speak the most or longest, she or I! I also have fond memories of Uncle John. It was a family joke, that I would bat my eyes and hug Uncle John, when I was little. I was told that my Aunt and Uncle then would say, "Perhaps we should try once more, for a baby girl". I loved them both dearly.

My sincere condolences to Aunt Alma's sons, and all of their descending and extended family... and also to Aunt Alma's many dear friends and neighbors. I was praying that she would make it to 100, but she surely came close, and accomplished a life well done! I love her, and will indeed miss her. I would enjoy any of her sons or other family members to keep in contact with me via FB. I would love to see any pictures of family. I am listed as Peggie Huffman Leigh. I am also sorry to not be present at her Memorial Celebration of her Life today.

Alma - you will be dearly missed. You were a wonderful friend not only to my mother but also to my dad after mom died. I'm so glad that you were part of my life.
