Alta Exhibee "Exie" Newcom, 90, of Evansville, IN and more recently, Prairie Village, KS passed away after a very brief illness surrounded by her loving family on September 4, 2017 at KU Med Center, ICU. "Exie" was born on June 2, 1927 to Maude and Norman Schutz in Grayville, IL. She is survived by her family, daughter, Angela Newcom Stout and husband, John Thomas Stout, Jr. and her beloved grandchildren, Peter Newcom Stout and John Thomas Stout, "Jack", married to Margaret Kennedy Stout. She is also survived by two lovely nieces, Doris Case and Joyce O'Daniel.
Exie attended Lockyear's Business College in Evansville, IN where she was a member of Theta Alpha Chi sorority. She and many of the other female students resided at the YWCA and lifelong friends were made while there. She put her newly acquired business skills to work when she took a job at Electronics Research in Evansville, IN in 1946. It was there that she met Chester Newcom. It was definitely NOT love at first sight as she found him to have a rather large chip on his shoulder! He must have won her over as she finally agreed to a first date. They went to a fireworks display and then to dinner at Mac's Bar-be-cue. They must have made their own fireworks that night because they were engaged a year later! They walked down the aisle in 1948 and remained happily married until Chester's death 51 years later. They were avid University of Evansville Aces basketball fans and were season ticket holders! They enjoyed traveling and especially cruising with their dear friends.
Exie joined Mead Johnson Pharmaceuticals in 1958 in the International Division. She held various positions of increasing responsibility for Mead Johnson Pharmaceuticals/Bristol -Myers Squibb including Coordinator of Sales Services; Coordinator, Associate and then Manager of Professional Affairs in Professional and Trade Relations. In addition to other duties, she managed the awards program from 1967 until her retirement in 1992. This program was designed to recognize and honor outstanding pre-practicing physicians. While there, she was also appointed to the National Osteopathic Foundation Board of Directors.
Gram-Exie adored and doted on her grandchildren, Jack and Peter from the moment they were born. She was completely thrilled when Kennedy joined her family and was front and center at their St. Louis wedding. She set an example for her family by her reliance on God and His grace and the grit and gumption He provided her!
Behind her shy, quiet, sweet demeanor was an extremely talented dynamo! In addition to her successful career, her baking skills were second to none. Her homemade coconut and red velvet cakes were legendary! Paper thin cut out sugar cookies that melted in your mouth in every shape and size were a part of every occasion. Exie was also a very accomplished seamstress and tailor, and she loved to go to movies, read and play bridge.
Exie was a member of First Christian Church. She sang alto for the choir for many years and was secretary and treasurer of her Circle. She was a Hadi Honored Lady, a member of the Turner's Ladies Club, Daughters of the Nile as well as the Robert Morris Chapter of the Eastern Star.
Exie's life was a fine example of a life well lived. She rarely had a negative word to say and her smile was radiant and genuine. Even at the end of her life, she was thanking the nurses who were caring for her. They said they had NEVER experienced anyone like her and thanked us for the privilege of getting to care for her! She always put everyone else's needs and wants before her own and was the most giving and completely unselfish person. When you were in her presence, you were wrapped in a warm blanket and loved completely.
Exie will be returned to Evansville for her celebration of life ceremony officiated by Rev. Jerry Clark. She will be gently laid to rest beside the love of her life, Chester. Visitation will be Saturday, September 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 with the service following at the Alexander East Funeral Home, 2115 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN 47714. Angela, I regret that I will be unable to attend the funeral tomorrow. I will always cherish the memories of the Christmases you and your mom and dad spent at my grandmother and granddad's house. I will always remember Exie as one of the kindest and most gracious ladies I have ever known. God bless you and your family in this time of loss.
