Alton Haskell Eargle, Sr. LITTLE MOUNTAIN - Alton Haskell Eargle, Sr., age 92, of Little Mountain, SC, died peacefully Saturday evening, April 20, 2013, in the Warriors Walk hospice hall of the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center. Born February 23, 1921, in Peak, SC, he was the son of the late Alvin Hugh Eargle and Mattie A. (Koon) Eargle. LITTLE MOUNTAIN - Alton Haskell Eargle, Sr., age 92, of Little Mountain, SC, died peacefully Saturday evening, April 20, 2013, in the Warriors Walk hospice hall of the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center. Born February 23, 1921, in Peak, SC, he was the son of the late Alvin Hugh Eargle and Mattie A. (Koon) Eargle.
Alton was a veteran of World War II from which he received three honorable discharges from military service spanning from 1937-1948 as a member of the SO #1 Headquarters Battery, 17th Field Artillery from Ft. Bragg, NC. Ranking as a Staff Sergeant, Alton toured Europe and North Africa as part of the European Theater. He fought in battles and campaigns in Tunisia, Sicilia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Among numerous decorations and citations, he was awarded the EAMET Campaign Medal with 7 Bronze Service Stars, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He qualified as an expert gunner and rifleman. After military service, Alton was employed by Ft. Jackson. Later, he married and settled into raising his family. His passions after the military were his family, mechanics, gardening, and spending time walking in the woods surrounding his home. Alton was a member of the American Legion, SC Post #0172. He was a lifetime member of the DAV, John W. Crews, Chapter 13, DAV Commanders Club, and St. Jacob's Lutheran Church, Chapin, SC.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Margaret Wessinger Eargle; children, Rose Marie Flint of Lexington, SC and Alton H. Eargle, Jr. of Blythewood, SC; grandchildren, Tara Sessions, Starling Eargle and Jake Eargle; great-grandchild, Jesse Sessions and many other loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and relatives. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Carroll H. Eargle, Ollie L. Eargle and Junie D. "Buddy" Eargle and his sisters, Emma Janet Lindler and Sarah Virginia Faulk.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at St. Jacob's Lutheran Church, Chapin, SC, with Rev. George Rushe officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jacob's Lutheran Church or the Disabled American Veterans Association.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sarah Bell and the PCU and Hospice staff at the VA Medical Center.
