BALCOM, Alvin Lloyd

Surrounded by his family, Alvin Lloyd Balcom passed away Monday, June 24, 2013 in Spokane Valley. He was born in Davenport, WA on February 12, 1924. He attended West Valley High School and graduated from Otis Orchards High School. He was a WWII Veteran with the Army's 75th Infantry Division that participated in the Battle of the Bulge. While in France he met and married his wife, Flora, in 1946.
In 1959, they moved to the original Muzzy Homestead at the north end of Newman Lake where he devoted his time and toil. He served as President of the Newman Lake Homeowners Association, elected to the county Advisory Board for the Newman Lake Flood Control District, and volunteered on the fire department.
Alvin was a kind and giving man, who valued his family, friends and neighbors. He loved to sail and travel. Favorite times were camping at Priest Lake with his family. A life-long farmer, he also worked in manufacturing and retired from Clark Equipment and Wagstaff Engineering.
He is survived by his wife, Flora, of 66 years; three daughters: Lauretta Woolf-Block (Wayne), Juanita Richardson (Jim), Chantal Balcom; his son, Alvin Balcom (Renee); grandsons: Kevin Woolf (Emily), Michael Balcom (Nicole), James Richardson (Shelley), Brad Balcom, Joey Balcom, granddaughters: Shannon Woolf (Scott Komar), Jodie Woolf, Angela Barajas (Mike), Jaymie Balcom, and Natalie McFall; great-grandchildren: Riley Barajas, Chase Richardson, George Balcom, Lillian Woolf, Avalean Woolf; sisters: Veda Egbert, Claudia Sexton (Pete); brother, Bob Balcom (Louise); and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Franklin and Marie Beatrice (Bowers) Balcom; brothers: Kenneth Balcom and Clifford Balcom.
Visitation is on Friday, June 28th between 4:00 and 8:00 pm at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home, 1306 N. Pines Road, Spokane Valley, WA 99206. A Service and Celebration of Alvin's Life will be held on Saturday, June 29th at 2:00 pm, at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Graveside interment will follow at Pines Cemetery, 1402 S Pines Road, Spokane Valley, WA. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held after the interment.
