Amanda Marie Patty passed away peacefully on October 18 in Birmingham, AL. Born on August 2, 1978, Amanda was an attorney, accountant, and, most importantly, a principled, fair, loyal, and loving person. Born and raised in Greensboro, Amanda returned home after finishing her education and simultaneously dedicated herself to both her career and the community. She gave time and support to many causes, including Guilford Go Red for Women, the Women's Professional Forum, the Children's Home Society of NC, ArtsGreensboro, and her church, Christ United Methodist.
Amanda loved dancing, travel, crab legs, and all things lemon. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and that was a very good thing, because it was a big, beautiful heart. She was passionate about fighting injustice and inequality. She valued rational analysis over gut instincts. She knew who she was and what she believed---and she was willing to share these beliefs with anyone who would listen. In even the toughest of times, a stuffed animal would always make her smile and, without fail, illuminate even the darkest of rooms.
Amanda had many accomplishments during her time with us, including adding eight letters to her name (JD, CPA, CVA), visiting all 50 states (and doing so more quickly than her brother John), traveling around Europe multiple times (both alone and with her fiancée Scott), learning how to make the perfect scrambled eggs, and being honored as a member of the Triad Business Journal's "40 Under 40" this year. She was proud of having lived for two years, with her brother John, on the South Side of Pittsburgh, and he feels blessed to have those memories.
Amanda is survived by her fiancée, Scott Essick; her parents, Seldon and Dee Patty, all of Greensboro; her brother, John; sister-in-law Maggie; and niece, Hazel, all of Chicago; her grandmother, Sybil Patty and uncle, Tommy Patty, both of Hendersonville, NC; her uncle and aunt, Jimmy and Cynthia Bruton of Greer, SC; her uncle, William Darden of Faro, NC; and several loving and much-loved cousins. She is now meeting her older brother, James; grandfather, Daniel Patty; and once again with her grandparents, Charles and Hazel Wiggs; her aunt, Patricia Darden; and her best friend, Amanda White.
Amanda's family are thankful for the special care that she received from Dr. Dan Bensimhon. Dr. Paula Ross, both of Greensboro, Dr. Edward D. Colvin, Dr. Mark Law, and their colleagues at the Alabama Congenital Heart Disease Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 22, at 3 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 410 N Holden Rd, Greensboro, NC. The family will visit with friends following the service in the church.
In lieu of flowers, Amanda's family asks that memorial donations be made to the charity of one's choice.

Although I only knew Amanda through our joint work at Arts Greensboro I was always pleased to see how she would do what people are suppose to do...serve. She worked diligently to bring her approach and skills to her volunteer work. Too often people don't accept the responsibility...Amanda was NOT one of those. Greensboro has lost a great person and valuable member of the community.

Andrea and I want to express our deepest condolences. While I was not fortunate enough to get to meet Amanda in person, I knew from John's stories, Amanda's great comments on social media, and this beautiful obituary that she was a wonderful person that made her community and those close to her better. I also feel a connection to her since I know she appreciated the South Side as much as I do. There is not an adequate way to express how sorry we are for your loss, but we did make a donation to ArtsGreensboro to honor Amanda's commitment to community. We hope in some way that will help others follow in her example and keep in perspective what's really important. We're sending our love to John, Maggie, Hazel, and the rest of the family in this difficult time.

I remember Amanda when she was a child and how everyone
worried about if she could make it through many operations.
Dee and Seldon really hung tough and they all pulled through.
To know how grandly she lived I hope will be some comfort.

I only knew Amanda for a short period of time. During our encounter I loved her determination and witty sense of humor very similar to mine. I often joked that we were a part of a cast "The Amanda Patty Show"!! I am reminded of Amanda as I wear a shell necklace she and her mom brought back from Hawaii for me. Isn't that just like Amanda? Taking the time to find the perfect gift for someone she just met.
May you find comfort from the Holy Spirit and your many fond memories.

Amanda and I worked together at the very beginning of the Spark service at CUMC as worship hosts. She was a very smart, courageous, outspoken, strong young lady. With all that she had going on she NEVER complained (to me anyway). She just seemed to take her situation in stride displaying strength and grace. She did not mind talking about it but never looked for sympathy, she simply wanted to educate. I just saw her about a month ago a and she looked great. This was such shockingly sad news. Sleep in Heavenly peace Amanda. You were certainly an asset to this world.

People enter our lives for a reason - if only to remind us of things we forgot. And sometimes we meet very special people along the way. Amanda Patty is one of these very special people who reminds us how precious our time is in this world, that we should live each day to its fullest, to care about strangers & friends alike, and that we can do anything if we pour our hearts into it and apply our minds. This is what I learned about Amanda in just 10 days. You will be missed, Amanda, but your spirit lives on in our hearts and minds.

I am sorry for your loss. The obituary was written so beautiful. I felt as if I knew her. I am a bookkeeper and just felt moved that she accomplished all that she did. I do not know her but feel as if I did. Thanks for letting us know why. I read these and see people so young passing on, and wonder why. Thanks for sharing and allowing me to give this info to you. She is beautiful and God let her touch a lot of lives. She even touched mine.

I only met Amanda once, I believe, we were both 5 or so. My mom told me about her heart condition and I was so impressed by her having a "bad heart" but she was just like me. There are some memories that you have as child that stick with you and you don't know why, and meeting her stuck with me.

What a great contribution in such a short time that she spent in enriching our lives with her presence. Surely a great testimate of the love and support of her parents as they encouraged their special daughter. we shall miss Amanda and embrace her loving parents. Though short a tremendous acknowledgement of a life well lived. Seldom and Dee , you are great parents. Nancy & Bill Smith

Amanda was one very impressive young woman. Smart, talented, fun to be with. I served with her on the board of Family Life Council and loved knowing her in Women's Professional Forum, too. My heart breaks. I will hold her family close in my heart.
