Andres "Andy" Hulslander Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 7, 2015.

Andres "Andy" Karl Hulslander, 45, Lake Forest Park, WA, died Saturday, June 27, 2015, in Seattle, WA as a result of injuries sustained when he was hit by a drunk driver while bicycling home from work.
Andy was born August 20, 1969 in Birmingham, AL, the beloved eldest son of Richard and Carol Hulslander. They moved to Lindenhurst, NY in 1970. Andy enthusiastically welcomed his little brother, David Hulslander, in 1973. The family moved to Reading PA in 1974. Andy was an accomplished violist, playing with competitive regional and state orchestras in PA. Andy and David spent many fall days hunting with their Dad, summer afternoons at the pool with their Mom, and the whole family would enjoy camping during summer break. Andy was also an exceptionally talented cyclist, successfully competing in road and track races while racing for Future Champions Cycling Club in Trexlertown, PA. Training partners knew to expect a blazing pace riding with him. He was especially admired for his gifted handling skills; he could descend a hill or navigate a peloton better than anyone. He was a wonderful older brother to David Hulslander, and the two spent many happy hours playing cycling hunting and fishing in the outdoors right until the end. They shared a love of early Datsun Z cars and would grab any chance to work on or talk about them together.
Andy graduated from Governor Mifflin High School in 1987. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management at Juniata College in 1991, where he competed on the varsity Volleyball and Cross Country teams. Following graduation he worked as a Marketing Representative for John Hancock Financial Services in Reading, PA for 2 years before relocating to the west coast. He was very active in bicycle racing starting on Lehigh County Velodrome, PA. Andy moved to Seattle in 1993, participating in top-level track cycling racing there while working his way up to managing stores for Bicycles West. Andy was a very successful Cat II cyclist with Team Wheelsport on both road and track. He first met Dana Tiedemann, of Penfield NY, and later proposed to her, at Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond, WA.
Andy and Dana were married August 28, 1999 at Newfound Lake, NH. After the wedding they moved to NYC where Andy worked as a Placement Manager for Wall Street Services while Dana completed her graduate degree. They returned to Seattle in 2001. They loved cycling together on the roads and hills around Seattle and did multi-day tours on their tandem. They hiked and camped together frequently all over western WA. Sharing a passion for photography, they enjoyed discovering new places together and capturing their adventures in pictures. They had a deep, loving and committed relationship and were the best of friends. Their first daughter, Leah Hulslander, was born January 2006 and sister Kate followed September 2008.
Andy was a devoted parent and his daughters adored him. He was a familiar face at the girls' elementary school, regularly volunteering in the classroom. He coached volleyball when daughter Leah played in a summer US Youth Volleyball League. He taught Kate the finer points of archery when she showed a budding interest. He always made time to play with them and share with them his love and knowledge of

wildlife and astronomy. Andy was the chef of the family and his interest in cooking was something he handed down to his children. The Hulslander family made ritual visits to Skagit Valley to see the annual bird migration, to Whidbey Island and the coast, as well as trips to the Methow Valley. Andy was a talented writer and his annual Christmas letter will be missed by all.
Andy received his PHR (Professional in Human Resources) credential in 2007 while working as a Human Resources Coordinator for GM Nameplate, and started working for Bartell Drugs in 2009, first in Human Resources and later managing stores. He genuinely enjoyed working with people and was known for his friendly manner, quick laugh, and ready smile. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Andy was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, son-in-law, cousin, neighbor and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Dana Hulslander; daughters Leah and Kate; parents Richard and Carol Hulslander, Lubbock, TX; brother David Hulslander and wife, Jacqueline, and son Theo, Boulder, CO; sister-in-law Karen Tiedemann and husband Bruce Dodge, Albany, NY; mother-in-law Carole Tiedemann, Tacoma, WA; aunt Marcia Kinnamen and husband Robert, Wilmington, DE; aunt Anne Wagner, San Antonio, TX; and cousins Andrew, Jimmy, Carrie, and Theresa.
He is preceded in death by grandparents Donald and Marianne Hulslander, and Ray and Evelyn Wigle.
The family will receive friends at Acacia Memorial Park in Lake Forest Park Friday July 10 from 4 PM to 5 PM and again at 7 PM. A private celebration of his life for friends and family will be held at Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond, WA Saturday July 11 at 3 PM. Preceding this event there will be a memorial bike ride for those who wish to participate. Riders will meet at Lake Forest Park Town Center at noon, refreshments will await all at the velodrome.

So sorry to hear this. I realize it is a bit late, but just saw what happened. I knew Andy through junior high and high school, and we kept in touch for a bit afterward. He always had a smile on his face and a gleam in his eye. My condolences go out to Dana and the girls. I hope you find comfort.

I keep remembering more about Andy ~ he was such a classy guy. At Bartell corporate he had a cupboard in the lunchroom and everyday would pull out real silverware and a cloth napkin. He would fix a sandwich and have a bowl of soup. It was a big meal and we all knew it was because he was so fit and could handle the calories, and wished we were more like him.

Dear Dick and Carol,
Nothing confirms the fact that life is fundamentally unfair more clearly than the loss of a child. My heart is with you as walk this most difficult part of life. I was saddened to read the story of Andy's death in the Reading Eagle the other day and was immediately taken back to the time when he worked for me helping me to strip the paint off woodwork in a grand old building I had purchased on Mineral Spring Road. Not sure if it was his first summer job but I certainly appreciated his efforts. I was also taken back, Dick, to our many competitive battles on the raquetball court at the Y during the time we both worked for American/Meridian Bank. I think Bob Hoppes had told me at one point that you had found your way to Lubbock. Outside of the present circumstances I hope life has been good to you and your family.

May God grant you all the strength to endure during this most trying of times. Please accept my deepest sympathies and know that I cherish the memories of our friendship.
With kind regards,
Tom Staverosky

Although I have not seen Andy since he was a teenager and our families lost touch, I am not surprised that he became such a wonderful man. My memories trace back to his early childhood; Brecknock Elementary, baseball, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, fishing, crabbing, hunting lizards, chasing chickens in our back yard, and all the other child hood fun shared with my children Dustin, Dree and Tressa. My love and condolences to his family, and to you Carol, Andy, and my cherished friend Dick.

I went to high school with Andy and he was a dear friend to me during troublesome teenage years. I remember sitting with him in the Spanish classroom in the mornings before class started and he would always talk about biking. I lost contact with him after graduation but it's no surprise to me that he was successful. All my sympathies to his family.

To Dana and The family, I had the awesome oppurtunity to work with Andy at Bartells at the Lake City store and can honestly say I have in my 40 years never met a more nicer human being in my life. Andy, knowing I was having my first child and being a father himself, offered me and my wife to go grocery shopping for us, babysit, buy diapers he said whatever we needed he would do and I was so touched by his generosity. He soon left to Wallingford and I to Marysville but we kept in touch and enjoyed each others company at our managers meetings . I have since left the company and moved to the Spokane area but wanted the Dana and his girls to know he was a great person to work with and a great guy and will be missed my and my family's prayers will be with you

To Andy's family: I know Andy from working with him at the Bartell Corporate office. He had such a great personality, worked so well with everybody, was liked by all. I admired him for his enthousiasme for bike riding, but most for his love for his girls. He just beamed whenever he had the chance to talk about them. Andy will be missed by all who knew him. I offer my condolences to his wife and daughters and the entire family. He leaves an incredible void.

To Andy's family ~ Dana and the girls ~ so sorry for your loss. I worked with Andy at Bartell Corporate and what has been said about him is true - his love of his family and of cycling. He had your photos on his desk, and you could tell he was incredibly fit from riding. I would say 'hi' to him after he went to work in the Lake City Bartells. A stand up guy. He will be missed by all. ~ Teresa
