Andrew Kilcarr, who had earned a national reputation for skillful trial work in several landmark lawsuits and prosecutions, died on Sunday, Dec. 21 at his home in Arlington, surrounded by family. His death followed a mere four weeks after the passing of his devoted wife and partner of 60 years, Barbara Kilcarr. Mr. Kilcarr was 82.
After graduation from Manhattan College in 1953, Mr. Kilcarr served as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon receiving his J.D. degree in 1959 from Georgetown Law School, he was an attorney in the Trial Section of the Antitrust Division at the Department of Justice. He continued trying cases after joining Donovan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine in New York City in 1964, where he later revived and ran its Washington office. In 1986, Mr. Kilcarr moved his practice to Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells) where he remained as a Partner in the Litigation and Antitrust Practice group until his retirement in 2000. He was a fellow of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers and retired in 2000.
Among the highlights of Mr. Kilcarr's long and notable career as a litigator, he handled the administrative litigation regarding the start-up of the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), eventually arguing new theories to the US Supreme Court on behalf of all TAPS owners. In addition, he led the defense of Mobil Corporation in numerous complex litigation and class actions, combining effective trial skill with statesmanship in finding alternative dispute solutions. He also provided counsel to trade associations and clients in businesses as varied as banana imports, tuna processing, movies and electrical manufacturing.
Mr. Kilcarr is survived by his brothers, Paul (Jean) and John (Marie), each a resident of Williamsburg, VA. He is also survived by two children: Theresa Kilcarr Balaran (Paul) of Washington, DC and Patrick (Alienor), also of Washington, along with nine grandchildren: Payton, Bryce, Benjamin, Mason, Trent, Troy, Reese, Delaney and Olympia.
A wake will be held on Tuesday Dec. 23 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm at Murphy's Funeral Home 4510 Wilson Boulevard Arlington, VA 22203. The funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday Dec. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church 1910 North Randolph Street Arlington VA 22207. Burial will follow at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, also in Arlington.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations in Mr. Kilcarr's memory may be made to the Semper Fi Fund 825 College Blvd., Suite 102, PMB 609 Oceanside, CA 92057.

My sympathies and condolences to Pat ,Terry , Family .
The best memory I have of your Dad was an outing at Golden Eagle one year . We had all come back from dinner relaxing in the great room . Andrew got into telling about his time with the Corps . We were enthralled with the story silent while he was telling it . When Andrew finished Jack called him on it , all of us laughing so hard for a great night of family .

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

My sincerest condolences to the Kilcarr family and the many colleagues who will miss Andy. As a Mobil attorney, I learned a great deal from him. I will never forget one very cold winter trial in Hartford, watching Andy at his best in court while the U.S launched the first Gulf War. He was truly a gentleman and a scholar, and will be missed.
