Drew was born in Coronado, California on September 26, 1977. He attended elementary school in San Diego and in Miami, Florida, and Windward High School in Los Angeles, California, graduating in 1995. He graduated from UCSD in 2001 with a BA degree in Visual Arts (Media and Computing). While at UCSD, Drew belonged to Sigma Alpha Mu, served as President of the DJ's and Vinylphiles Club and enjoyed working on stagecraft for several theater productions.
Following graduation, Drew worked briefly at Hertz, but then followed his heart to become a chef. He graduated from the Laguna Culinary Arts Professional School, and was thrilled to be hired for the opening of the Loft restaurant at Montage Laguna Beach. He worked at the Loft Restaurant at the Montage Resort until he was diagnosed with a career-limiting medical condition that left him in chronic pain.
Reassessing his career options, Drew then decided to return to school at USC, and to pursue a career in teaching, where the physical demands of the job would be more manageable. He graduated with a degree in Sociology in 2010. Sadly, his medical condition worsened, and he passed away quietly on September 16, 2015. He is now at peace, and we pray that we will see him again in the next life.
Drew was an independent thinker. He saw the world as a wondrous opportunity to learn and observe and participate, but always looked for the alternative, never the mainstream. He was smart, funny, honest and kind - a man of great character and compassion. He showed heroic courage in dealing with his health challenges with strength and resolve. He was humble. He showed love and respect for all he met, volunteered to serve others where he could, and was helpful, honoring, positive and hopeful.
Drew was a great friend to his friends, a beloved son to his parents, a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews, and a generous soul to strangers. He will be missed by all who knew him during his all-too-brief time with us.
Andy's cats were a great source of comfort and companionship. We think he'd be pleased if a donation were made to PetSmart Charities (www.petsmartcharities.org) or Petco Foundation (www.petcofoundation.org/) in lieu of flowers.

I knew Andrew by another name. Mangraa Dementia, from Eve Online. I regret not knowing about his passing until just now. He was one of only a handful of people I could call a friend. He was a unique individual and I enjoyed his company tremendously. But his pain is no more and I will see him again one day.

I played EvE Online with Drew. He was easily one of the best friends I've had, and although we never met in person, the friendship we shared and the times we shared in-game were invaluable. I had not seen him around for a few months and was worried that something had happened... thank you for letting us all know.

We are both SO sorry for your pain & huge loss.
Sometimes the Lord calms the storm. Sometimes He lets the storm rage, and He calms the soul. My prayer is He's calming your family's souls during this most difficult time.
After the darkness, the daylight shines through.
After the showers, the rainbow's in view.
After life's heartaches, there comes from above the peace & the comfort of God's healing love.
Much love & prayers,
Rick & Susan

Our deepest condolences to you both on the untimely death of Drew. We know nothing can fill the void as the permanence of the loss is almost existential in nature. May his memory bring you comfort and eventual smiles.

A couple of years ago, when Drew was turning 35, he told me he'd made it "half-way" and that he'd have to consider himself middle-aged now- assuming he'd live to be at least 70! I chided him and told him he was so young! I assured him he'd live past 70. I'm saddened that we won't know a truly middle-aged Drew. He will be missed. Our love and prayers to you, Uncle John & Aunt Bonnie.

I'm so sad whenever someone so young passes away.... But, I thought I'd share the college recommendation I wrote for him (I hope it's not too long):
Andy is an original child of technology; a student to whom one only has to mention the word computer or say the sentence, Let's get out our graphing calculators to explore that function to get his attention. Making the jump from our regular Algebra II/Trigonometry to my Precalculus class is difficult even under the best of circumstances; last year, with the quality of our Algebra II/Trigonometry Honors students (who averaged 675 on the Math level IIC tests they took last June), the jump was significantly harder. A 76% on the first test of the year (the class average was 92%) alerted Andy to the problem, and he took speedy action. Spending many lunch periods with me and working with other students on homework and test and quiz preparation, he had earned an 89.71% average by the end of the year including an excellent 98% on the final examination (which was significantly above the class average). His B+ was truly earned, and he felt very good about his success.
That's the kind of student Andy is. He's a serious and hardworking individual with a wide range of interests. He is personable and cheerful and always excited about something, whether it is a new gizmo he's discovered, a new computer or calculator program he's found on the Internet, a cable to connect his computer to his calculator (saving him the $25 Texas Instruments charge) or a test result of which he's particularly proud. After computers, technology and mathematics, he is most passionate about theatre, particularly the problems of running a stage production. He spends endless hours working with his technical theatre classes perfecting the gizmos and gadgets that make Windward's plays so wonderful. He was most proud of a radio-controlled smoke bomb which helped make the appearance of the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz truly a sight to behold (and it even worked four nights in a row, but, alas, not on the fifth and last night, when I was in the audience). For our Precalculus class, he built an elliptical pool tableout of scraps of woodin order to demonstrate the well know echo principal: if you stand at one focus of an elliptical room and whisper, someone standing at the other focus can hear your words, loud and clear. In his case, he demonstrated that if you shoot a billiard ball with a path which goes over one of the two foci, it'll always carom over the other focus.
