Ann Rhoads Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2017.

Ann M. Rhoads went to rest peacefully on the 27th of April 2017. She was in the warm care of her family in her home with her loving dog until the moment that she passed.

As a young woman, Ann attended Univ. of Houston where she met, and later married, Walter E Rhoads. Ann loved being a mom, Mammaw, and Great Mammaw, social events, family gatherings, dining out, having friends stop by, and taking care of her dogs. She loved Cocker Spaniels. And she loved her Scotch!

Born April 2, 1922 in Bay City, TX, Ann lived an extraordinary life. By the age of 95, Ann lived thru a World War, the Vietnam War, a Great Depression, and 17 Presidents. She was responsible for three generations of family, saw more modern day inventions than most of her existing family can remember; and has been here for the entire life of the Astrodome, rarely missing an Astros game there for over 25 years. Mezzanine level season tickets were awesome, and if you never went to a game with her, and if you don't remember Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz then it's tough to understand.

Throughout her life she gave a lot of herself. She was most proud of her long time association with the San Jacinto Girl Scouts, mentoring countless girls and young women where she was known as 'Copperhead.' That and her ability to charm everyone she knew into buying more Stanley Home products and Girl Scout cookies than anyone could possible use or eat! Later, playing golf at Braeburn Country Club gave her a renewed appreciation for life.

What a wonderful and beautiful part of our lives you were. We will miss you and never forget all that you taught us. You will always be in our hearts.

An only child, she was preceded in death by her mother Anna Lee Martin, her husband Walter E Rhoads, and her grandson Michael Keith Crabtree.

Those she leaves to cherish her memories are two daughters: Patty McDonald and husband Harry, Sheri Crabtree and husband Dennis: three grandchildren Carey Crabtree, Daniel Kievit and wife Deanna, Khristyon Musick Sr and wife Ashley: three great grandchildren Khristyon Musick Jr, Kaya Kievit, Korbyn Kievit.

The family will be present for visitation on Thursday May 4th from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at The Settegast-Kopf Co. at Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Frwy (Williams Trace exit). A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 5, 2017 in the chapel of The Settegast-Kopf Co at Sugar Creek with Rev. Allen Owens officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dennis Crabtree, Jeff Crabtree, Daniel Kievit, Israeldivine Kuyinu, and Khristyon Musick Sr, and Bill Zeiner. In celebration of Ann's life, friends are welcome to gather at the family home following the service.

Patty & Sheri, we just learned of Ann's passing. I am sorry I wasn't able to be at her service. Ann was an original in the very best sense of the word. She was always a fashionable, elegant, funny aunt and even more interesting to know as an adult when I could appreciate her wit more fully. My sympathies -- you've lost a really special person. Thank you for the beautiful memories and experiences you gave me. You showed us how GREAT leaders lead and gave us the confidence we could be leaders. When my daughter's were old enough to be
Brownies, it felt natural to become a leader. I have 2 daughter's so 2 troops was only natural. I had great adventures with the girls. You were my inspiration. Thank you for sharing your gift and time.

As others have expressed, Ann was a great Girl Scout leader and had a big impact on many of us. She encouraged me to persist with swim lessons as a child so that I could sail with the other Girl Scouts later on when I got to high school. She then led us on many sailing and camping trips, gave us opportunities to just hang out with each other away from home, and even planned and chaperoned a small group of us on a bus and train trip all the way to Mexico City. Along with others in Girl Scouting, she helped open our eyes to different possibilities in the world, and I'm forever thankful for that.

To the Rhoads family:
Thank you for sharing her with us. Ann was our girl scout leader in Spring Branch when we were in high school. She managed to keep a large group of us interested and busy through graduation. Many of us continued and were active leaders with our own daughters. She was a special lady with a big heart. The photo you have shared captures her wonderful spirit. May your wonderful memories give you comfort. We will pray for your family during this difficult time.

I am so sorry to hear about Ann. She was my Girl Scout leader in the early 70's and I still remember the impact she had on me. I am still in Girl Scouts 40 years later and it was because of women like Ann Rhoads, Nancy Smith and Jean Lieder. They all touched the lives of so many and probably never realized their impact. My prayers are with the family during this time.

Ann and Dusty lived across the street from us when the girls were born. We spent many hours with them. A lot of former girl scouts will remember her as the water safety person at camp. We still think of that house as theirs! We are so sorry to hear about her passing.

I will miss my mother in law Ann! She treated me like a son. I will miss our Astro "discussions" (she was a huge Astro fan but did not like Jeff Bagwell and I would keep on her about how good he was!) She always loved it when I cooked for her, and particularly liked my baby back ribs and homemade jalapeno cornbread! She made Christmas a big celebration, and made a great turkey and dressing! I know she is rejoicing in heaven reunited with her husband Dusty and Grandson (my son) Keith. Happy reunion and miss you all!

What a great neighbor Ann was when I lived two doors down from her in Sugar Creek. She kept the neighborhood together. Wonderful lady. I am so sorry for the family's loss.

Ann had a great sense of humor and loved her family, her doggies, golf at Brae Burn and the Houston Astros. She was always a good friend to me and my husband Jay through the years. We will miss her. Prayers to all of her family.
