Ann Kathryn Pollard Winters died on Tuesday, January 15, 2013. She will be remembered by all who knew and loved her as a kind and loving person, always ready with a word of encouragement. She was born the only child of Harvey DeWitt Pollard and Lillian Myrtle Huber Pollard in Wichita, Kansas on July 4, 1925, moving to Kansas City, Missouri as a small child. She graduated from Southeast High School at 16, and attended Kansas City Junior College for a year before earning a violin scholarship to Park College. There she was awarded her B.S. in chemistry in 1944. Subsequently she worked on her Masters degree in microbiology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. During this time she met and married her husband of almost 60 years, Charles Edward Winters, IV.
Ann raised three children while pursuing a long and fulfilling career in microbiology. She retired as the manager of the laboratory at the Veterans Hospital in Kansas City. In retirement, she was able to travel with her husband, enjoy her grandchildren and great grandchildren and pursue volunteer work. Special highlights in retirement were the years she spent with sorority sisters of Beta Sigma Phi and partner Howard Yingling.
Ann is predeceased by her beloved Yorkshire Terriers; her parents; her husband Charles; her son Charles Edward Winters, V; her granddaughter Elizabeth Desiree Winters Schoenbeck; and her grandson-in-law, Nicholas Eugene Lane. She is survived by her daughters Christine (and Joe) Garrett, Carolyn (and David) Kanter, and her partner Howard Yingling. She is also survived by her grandchildren Charles Edward VI (and Amy) Winters, Katie (and Brad Henry) Lane; Luke (and Lacey) Garrett; and Mark (and Keegan) Kanter. Great-grandchildren Tommy and Nick Lane, Mark and Kelly Murrain, Sydney and Morgan Kanter, and Tyson Garrett will remember her and smile.
Ann was a strong warrior protecting her family. She was also a sweet soul with nothing but tender loving care for her family and friends. Everyone she met has more than one special memory of her to hold in their hearts. Her family is grateful for the care she received in her declining years from Howard Yingling, Drew and Leslie Slickman, Bill Louis, and many, many other others too numerous to name. Donations to Unleashed Pet Rescue, 5918 Broadmore, Mission, Kansas 66202 are suggested in lieu of flowers. Visitation 2:00 p.m. followed by memorial services at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 26 at Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131. Condolences may be offered at www.mtmoriah-freeman.com.

"It was such a privilege to know Ann. What a terrific lady with great stories and a wonderful sense of humor!" Linda Smith (Overland Park, KS)
