Celebrating the Life of Anna Amanda Ferraro
Anna Amanda Lohr started her journey in life on an inauspicious day January 21, 1937, however it was well remembered by her parents. Her mother Sarah "Sadie" remembered her birth because an indoor pump was installed inside the house that day and that while crossing a field to get the doctor Her father Joe, fell up to his armpits in an abandoned outhouse pit and came home smelling like a latrine.
Born premature, the "runt" of the family. Her seven siblings Josie, Martha, Milt, Bill, Libby, John and Bobby called her Annie and teased her with the nickname "Anna Banana". Grandpa used to boast that she was his "tomboy" who had learned to drive his standard stick shift truck, a true challenge and skill in the winding hills of western PA. In her teen years the big excitement for her friends was driving to the airport to watch the jet aircraft take off and land. Her travel bug was probably planted at this time. She applied to be an airline stewardess but was turned down because she didn't meet the minimum weight requirement of 110 lbs.
After suffering a tragic loss at 22 years old, she drove over 800 miles from Monroeville PA with her two little girls to start a new life in NY. She graduated from Wilfred Beauty Academy in Brooklyn and spent many years styling and cutting hair, which she loved. She was warm and friendly and couldn't walk down the street without stopping many times to chat with people she knew. In High School she won an award for sales, but more importantly put her natural born sales talent to work with her extensive network of friends and acquaintances when she helped Gina win a bicycle during a school fundraising drive.
Ann was handy with tools and a drill, painting and wallpapering with a natural flair for decorating. She turned shabby into chic before HGTV made it so popular.
She passed the US Postal Service test and worked delivering mail. Eventually, she wound up in the Fort Hamilton Post Office and later married "the boss" Joe Ferraro. Anna and Joe retired to Florida, enjoying the warm weather and making lots of new friends. She went to Indian River Community College to get her Travel Agent certification because they loved to go on cruises and travel all over America and Europe. She was Mom to Sheree, Gina and John; Aunt Ann to her nieces and nephews; Anna to her husband, Joe, and to her friends in later years. She loved babies but Nani was proudest of and adored her grandchildren Danielle, Nicole, Anthony, Zachary, Zoe and Niko. With open arms she welcomed the latest additions to our family, Chris and Ryan.
Instinctively, she always knew the generous, polite and correct thing to do. She was always there to help others however she could. She truly lived the motto of "Treat your guests like friends and your family like guests." She loved entertaining and was the hostess with the mostest. She loved her kitchen and serving gadgets. We will all remember her Anisette Pizzelle cookies at Christmas.
Anna was a social butterfly her whole life, playing MahJohng, joining Jensen Beach Newcomer's Club and the Knights of Columbus Columbiettes. She and Joe joined Friendship Force to visit homes in other countries and enjoyed hosting others as guests in their home.
In her later years she had some health problems and became the Bionic Grandma getting replacements for her worn out parts.
These last few years she was lucky enough to meet her new best friend and constant companion Gale. He helped her navigate her last stop in her journey here in Texas, even recently taking her to her favorite hairstylist for a haircut. We all greatly appreciate his devotion and care for Anna.
Through it all she had a beautiful smile on her face.
We will miss you but we know you are watching over us with the other angels. We love you, Mom. Rest in peace.

Anna was a lovely lady and always smiling and positive. Anna liked to be busy and involved with people. She was missed when she moved to Texas and I had talked with her a few times after that. Her death was a surprise and everyone at St. Bernadette and the Columbiettes will miss her.
