Mayes, Anna Cordelia Keehner (nee), 94, passed away in Coral Springs, Florida, June 19th, at the home of her granddaughter. She was born February 27, 1920, in Louisville, KY.

Survivors are a daughter, Beverly June Mayes Pope Stinson, a son, Gregory Edward Mayes (Karen), a sister, Betty Jean Bowles, a granddaughter, Michelle Ann Pope Uribe (Santiago), grandsons, Edward Lee "Ted" Stinson (Angelique), Gregory Edward Mayes Jr. (Chelsea), and Morgan Keehner Jones Mayes;

Great-granddaughters: Kayla Marie, Abigail Lee, and Hannah Gene Pope, and Anna Elizabeth Stinson (her namesake);

Great grandsons: Michael Pope Graf (Elizabeth) and Jordan Mayes Nuwar; great-great grandsons, Lincoln Patrick and Wyatt Churchill Graf;

Sister-in-law, Doris Mayes Conlon; and dearly loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward "Junior" Mayes; parents, Ella Doriene Allen (nee) and Joseph Edward Keehner; sisters, Hulda Mae, Mildred Margarite, Julia Doriene, and Mary Dorcus; brothers, Joseph Edward, Martin Owen, and William Allen; grandson, Ronnie Gene Pope, Jr.; and mother-in-law, Myrtle Agnes Mayes.

She was a 1938 graduate of Louisville Girls High School. She was voted "most beautiful" by her classmates. She was a member of the Louisville Girls High School Alumnae Association. She taught Sunday school for 60 years in the United Church of Christ and was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a Kentucky Colonel. She was retired from the Jefferson County Clerk's Office where she served honorably for 33 years as head bookkeeper.

She was passionate about Democratic values and principles and always advocated for those less fortunate, fairness and equality for all.

She attended a tea for President John F. Kennedy with members of his family. During a visit to the Louisville Seelbach Hotel, she was gently kissed on the cheek by President Bill Clinton which was later told on a national radio talk show. As a guest of U.S. Senator Wendell Ford, she dined in the Capitol's Senate Dining Room and was a welcomed visitor to his office. In the summer of her 93rd year, while campaigning in Kentucky, Vice President Joseph Biden called to thank her for her many years of service to the Democratic Party.

Even in her mid-90's, she was an avid Louisville Cardinals Fan and enjoyed watching all the school's sports with her family.

The true joy of her life was her study of the Bible which she kept by her side and the time she spent with the family she cherished.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be given to Immanuel United Church of Christ.
