Nigro, Ann Kirby –age 93 of Knoxville, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Ft. Sanders Hospital. Ann was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the College of Law in 1943, where she was the first woman to receive the Moot Court Medal. After college she practiced law two years at Southern and Southern, Attorneys at Law, prior to opening a law firm with her husband, Judge Joseph J. Nigro. Ann and Joe were partners with Jim Haynes and later George Balitsaris. All three men became judges during their careers. Nigro, Ann Kirby –age 93 of Knoxville, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Ft. Sanders Hospital. Ann was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the College of Law in 1943, where she was the first woman to receive the Moot Court Medal. After college she practiced law two years at Southern and Southern, Attorneys at Law, prior to opening a law firm with her husband, Judge Joseph J. Nigro. Ann and Joe were partners with Jim Haynes and later George Balitsaris. All three men became judges during their careers. Ann was a member of the Knoxville Bar Association and the Tennessee Bar Association. She was a charter member of the East Tennessee Toastmistress Club. She was the second person in Knoxville to become a member of The National Association of Parliamentarians and later one of the two co-founders of the Tennessee Alpha Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians. Ann was a public speaker for civic clubs and other organizations for 40 years. Member of Knoxville Women's Choral Society, Association for the Preservation of Antiquities and Colonial Heights United Methodist Church joining in 1959. Ann was appointed head of the speakers bureau for the Knox Clean Air League. She was on the Constitutional Bicentennial Commission for Knoxville and Knox County. Preceded in death by husband, Judge Joseph J. Nigro; parents, V.C. Kirby, Sr. and Leona S. Kirby; three brothers and two sisters. Ann is survived by daughter; Joanne Nigro Simpson; grandson, Rob Simpson; sister, Wilda K. Alazawi-Barr; special niece, Gina Alazawi and husband, Jeff Ledford; several other nieces and nephews too numerous to mention; brothers-in-law, Anthony Clemente, Hikmat Alazawi; and sister-in-law, Angie Nigro. The family will receive friends from 12 Noon-2PM in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway on Saturday, August 25, 2012. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM, Rev. John Brewster officiating. Inurnment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Colonial Heights United Methodist Church, 6321 Chapman Highway, Knoxville, Tennessee 37920 or to Grassy Valley Baptist Church, 10637 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37922.
