Greensboro - Dr. Anne Frances Baecker, 97, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2011.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, August 3, 2001 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. A graveside service and interment will fbe held on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Church in Southfield, MI.

Dr. Baecker, professor of German and Russian, and former Department Head at UNCG, was born in Essen, Germany on July 12, 1914 and came to America in 1929. She subsequently received diplomas in French Language and Literature from Marygrove College, Detroit, MI and from Sorbonne University, Paris, France in 1939. Then, Dr. Baecker received her Master's in French from the University of Michigan (Go Blue) in 1942 and her PhD. in German from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1954. In 1960 she came to the great state of North Carolina (y'all), and became the head of the Language Department at UNCG until her retirement in 1981. Educating and teaching was her life and one of her goals was to introduce foreign language to students earlier in life. During WWII she taught our soldiers French and German before being deployed to Europe. She started German clubs, language labs and combined art programs to promote students in learning languages. Her Junior Year Abroad program in Heidelberg Germany is still a big hit today. She was campus chairman of the Fulbright program for nine years and stressed the advantage bi-lingual students would have in the World Market. She found time to write several texts which were published. One of her other goals was her work in the Pro Life movement. Anne marched in an annual Pro Life procession in Washington with founder Nelly Gray.

She is survived by her sister Mary Thiele, nephews Carl, Martin and August Baecker, Frank and Rudy Seichter; niece Mary Ann Thiele, and twenty three great and grand nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents Maria and August; her beloved brother August (Gunda); sisters, Chrystal (Hans) and Gertrude (Frank); and brother-in-law Joe Thiele.

Memorial contributions may be made to: UNCG-Advancement Services, 1100 W. Market Street, Office 100-G, Greensboro, NC 27402-6170. (attn:Donna Sexton / memo: Anne Baecker Study Abroad).

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Tuesday at Hanes Lineberry Vanstory Chapel.
