Anne (Wyner) Ember, Age 98, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Brookline, MA and Baltimore, MD, on Tuesday, April 7, 2014. For forty-four years beloved wife of the late Theodore Ember. Loving mother of Aaron Ember of Houston, TX, and Richard Ember & his partner Ross Poché of Houston, TX. Loving sister-in-law of Ruth Tankin. Dear aunt of Robert & Nilda Tankin, Alan & Carla Tankin, and Harry & Andrea Tankin. Dear cousin of Justin & Genevieve Wyner of Boston, MA. Anne was the daughter of the late Francis S. Wyner, judge of the Brookline Municipal Court, and his wife Frances Rose Wyner. She was the granddaughter of George and Gussie Wyner of Boston.
She graduated from Brookline High School in 1933, and received a B.A. in History of Art from Wellesley College, 1937. After Wellesley, she studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris 1937-1939. While in Paris she met and interviewed Pablo Picasso and Pierre Bonnard, and maintained a lifelong interest both in art history and in the technique of painting and sculpture. In March 1938, Anne traveled to Austria barely two weeks after Hitler's invasion and there became acquainted with the plight of Austrian Jews seeking to emigrate. Together with her mother Frances and her uncle Rudolph Wyner, she aided in the emigration to Boston of Jewish refugees Otto Zausmer, later associate editor for foreign affairs of the Boston Globe, and his wife Elizabeth Zausmer, later Director of the Physical Therapy and Child Evaluation Unit, Boston Children's Hospital. After a brief arrest by the Nazis in Salzburg, owing to a forbidden attempt to transport the Zausmers' valuables out of Austria in her luggage, in violation of proclaimed Nazi prohibitions for Jewish refugees, she and her mother were permitted to leave, and extended their travels with a stay in Prague, during the Sudentenland crisis and buildup to the Munich conference. Later in life she maintained that the full enormity of Hitler's acts against the Jews was not fully known in America as of March 1938 when Austria was invaded, and she hoped by proceeding with the pre-planned trip to better observe the true extent of the anti-Semitic campaign. In 1942, after returning to America, she married Theodore Ember of Baltimore, where she settled and raised her two sons Aaron and Richard, who cherish the memory of her passion for art and life. In addition to her painting and sculpture, she developed in later years a sustained interest in the child autonomy-focused teaching methods of educator Maria Montessori. Anne moved to Houston, Texas in 2003 to spend her later years living closer to her two sons.
Services at the Levine Chapel, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline, on Sunday, April 13 at 11:00am. Burial at the Adath Jeshurun Cemetery, Grove Street, West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, remembrances should be made to The Montessori Foundation, www.montessori.org

"Anne was a very giving person. She genuinely cared so much. When Robby and Ben (Tankin) were little, she bought them a reading program to help them learn..." Dana Mierzwicki (Crofton, MD)
