ANNE CULLOP LINKOUS

On August 13th Anne Cullop slipped away peacefully from her home of 58 years in Plantation, Florida. The family lost their greatest treasure and the city lost one of its "pioneers."

Anne was born in tiny Bluefield, Virginia at the Cullop family's home as the youngest of five children. Mother Carrie looked after home and family while Father William Henry worked on the area's many railroad bridges – deep in the heart of Appalachian coal country.

The former long-haired beauty contestant attended and graduated from the small schoolhouse situated on the hill directly behind the home and enrolled in business school across the state line in neighboring Bluefield, West Virginia. She quickly found employment as a secretary at a local automobile dealer, where she met another new employee, Cavil Linkous, son of the local postmaster, businessman and real estate baron. The courtship was brief, culminating in the acceptance of a marriage proposal and the necessity of enduring World War II.

Anne and Cavil did not see each other for several years, but were indeed married at war's end. The family grew quickly, and their first son, Cavil Lee, Jr., became one of the first "Baby Boomers." Gary Cullop arrived in 1952 and the family began to outgrow their garage apartment in Bluefield. The extended family began moving away from the cold weather in the early 50's and Anne and Cavil joined them in 1956. Although the small community of Plantation did not offer the amenities as did their larger northern home, the warm climate suited them well, and they enjoyed watching the rapid area growth. While the boys were at school and Cavil worked as a glazier and bookkeeper Anne worked part time – as the first church secretary at newly-dedicated Parkway Christian Church nearby.

Carol Anne, the sons' beloved "baby sister" arrived in 1961 and Mom needed to work additional hours to help support the family. She became a vital part of Broward County's Adult Education Division, assisting thousands of people of all ages attain their GED certificates. She retired from the county in the 1980's, and she and Cavil enjoyed, without looking back or regretting, their many "retirement" years together.

She and Cavil also enjoyed their two grandchildren, Lee Douglas Linkous, of Charlotte, North Carolina and Megan Marie Stahlman, who lives across the border in Taylors, South Carolina. Great-grandchildren Anne Marie and Vaughan recently added to the joy!

Cavil died in 2006 but the lovely home and grounds he and Anne built is still treasured by the three children, who will always have the fond memories of having been raised in such a loving and nurturing environment.

In lieu of flowers, greeting cards and condolences would be appreciated as Anne loved receiving cards from family and friends throughout her life. Anne was just two weeks shy of her 91st birthday when she died. Although a Florida resident for most of her life she never lost her original "southwest Virginia" accent – to the amazement of all her family and friends.

A celebration of Anne's life will be held on Monday, August 25th. The visitation begins at 10 AM, followed by the service, at Forest Lawn Memorial Home, 2401 Davie Road, Davie, Florida.
