MAGRUDER, Anne Warren – July 2, 2011. Born in Nashville August 23, 1920, she was preceded in death by parents, William Thomas Magruder Jr. and Eliza Warren Magruder and brother, William Thomas Magruder III of Shelbyville. Survived by brother, Samuel Warren Magruder (Carolyn) of Atlanta, Georgia and Cashiers, North Carolina and sister, Ellen Magruder Nicholson of Tucson, Arizona. Anne was a graduate of Earlham College and was employed by Eastern Airlines for 40 years. She traveled extensively worldwide, including several countries where travel is now restricted. MAGRUDER, Anne Warren – July 2, 2011. Born in Nashville August 23, 1920, she was preceded in death by parents, William Thomas Magruder Jr. and Eliza Warren Magruder and brother, William Thomas Magruder III of Shelbyville. Survived by brother, Samuel Warren Magruder (Carolyn) of Atlanta, Georgia and Cashiers, North Carolina and sister, Ellen Magruder Nicholson of Tucson, Arizona. Anne was a graduate of Earlham College and was employed by Eastern Airlines for 40 years. She traveled extensively worldwide, including several countries where travel is now restricted.
A devout Episcopalian and lifelong member of Church of the Advent Episcopal, Anne was the first woman elected to the Vestry and served as junior warden supervising the move of Advent from 17th and Edgehill to its present location on Franklin Road. She served on the Search Committee to call a priest to Advent and was a delegate from Advent to several Diocesan Conventions. She was active in the Diocese of Tennessee, being elected to the Tennessee Episcopal Bishop and Council, the Standing Committee and a deputy to the General Convention. She served on two Diocesan Episcopate Committees which nominated The Rt. Rev. George Lazenby Reynolds and later, The Rt. Rev. Bertram Nelson Herlong who became Bishops of Tennessee. In 1995, she was awarded the Bishop's Cross for outstanding lay leadership. She was listed in Who's Who of Episcopal Lay-Leadership. Through the years, Anne was vice president of the Episcopal Retirement Association, served two terms as president of the Dandridge Trust and served many terms on the St. Mary's Retreat & Conference Center board of directors, where there is now the Anne Magruder Legacy Society established in her honor. In February of this year, the Board of Trustees honored Anne by naming her as an emeritus member of the St. Mary's Sewanee Board of Trustees. She was the first board member to ever receive this distinction. Anne was a member of the Nashville Opera Guild, a life member of The Ladies Hermitage Association and a member of the James K. Polk Memorial Association. She was treasurer of many groups including Eastern Airlines Employees Club, Eastern Airlines Retirees of Nashville, St. Lydia Chapter of Church of the Advent and St. Mary's in Sewanee. Funeral service will be held at Church of the Advent Episcopal on July 6 at 1:00 p.m. with The Rt. Rev. Bertram Herlong as Celebrant, assisted by The Very Rev. Robert Dedmon, Dean of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, Peoria, IL and The Rev. Thomas Hotchkiss, Rector of Church of the Advent. Visitation will precede the service from 11:00 to 1:00 in the Moss Room at the church. Pallbearers will be nephews Patrick Farnsworth, Andrew Magruder and Justin Magruder along with Doug Hutchison and Hunter McCarty. Burial will follow the church service at the Malone gravesite in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Anne Magruder Legacy Society at St. Mary's Episcopal Center, P.O.
