Obituary

Antoinette Gerardi Scarpaci was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1908. She was the oldest of five children born to Nicholas and Vincenza Gerardi who emigrated from Sicily in 1906. Throughout her life Antoinette's natural curiosity prompted her to ask questions about her parent's lives in Italy. Her love for learning and reading continued long after she had to leave school at age 15. Her three children's reading habits started at an early age and helped them to expand their horizons beyond their Bedford Stuyvesant/Ocean Hill neighborhood.
Lena (as Antoinette was known by friends and family) worked in office jobs, then part-time as an office nurse for a gynecologist. Her final employment was a clerk typist for Nassau County in New York.
She was interested in politics and well versed on the issues. She encouraged her friends to get involved. She admired individuals who fought for social causes. She loved a good discussion.
During the mid 1940's she became an avid Brooklyn Dodger fan and participated in the team's Knot Hole Gang Club. This Club provided low cost tickets to teenagers to attend afternoon games at Ebbets Field. She invited all the kids on the block (a diverse ethnic/racial mix) to attend paying for their subway fare and hotdog and soda at the game.
Lena's cooking talents were widely acknowledged. She prepared Italian and American dishes, but was especially known for the Sicilian pizza she made from the recipe her father taught her. She was generous in sharing the wonderful foods she prepared and continued to cook for herself even after moving into the Oaks of Clearwater a few months after her 90th birthday.
She was proud of her parent's Italian heritage and enjoyed speaking Sicilian with her two brothers, two sisters and her husband. She toured Italy with her husband in 1970 and visited Calatafimi, her parent's birthplace where she met some cousins. She returned to Sicily again in 1995.
Lena married Frank J. Scarpaci in 1928. They were married for 63 years and had three children, four grandchildren and two great granddaughters. In 1973, Lena and her husband moved to Clearwater living on Barcelona Drive.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 11 AM at St. Cecelia Church, 820 Jasmine Way, Clearwater. An additional Memorial Service will follow at the Oaks of Clearwater, 420 Bay Avenue, Clearwater at 1 PM.
