Armin F. Haerer, M.D., Professor Emeritus of the UMC Department of Neurology , died Monday, April 16 at St Catherine's Village. He was 78. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Dr. Haerer received his doctorate from the University of Michigan Medical School. He saw military service as Chief of Neurology at Fort Knox, KY. One of his most prized honors was as a participant in Project HOPE to Ceylon in l968-69. His many professional memberships include the American Academy of Neurology (fellow), Alpha Omega Alpha, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi (President, UMC chapter, 1977), Central Society for Neurologic Research (President 1981-82), American College of Physicians (fellow), and American Neurologic Association. He was Chief of the Neurology Service, U.S. VA Hospital, Jackson, MS. He was author or co-author of 164 neurologic publications.
Apart from medicine, he loved classical music and his violin. He first played with the Plymouth, Michigan Symphony Orchestra, and after he moved to Jackson, was first chair violinist with the (then) Jackson Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Haerer was born in Stuttgart, Germany on March 28, 1934, the son of the late Hugo and Frida Haerer. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Volkmar Haerer; daughters, Alice Haerer Holland (Ben M.) of Madison and Martha Haerer West (Bill) of Brandon; brother, Herwalt Haerer of Richmond, WA; and sister Arnhilt H. Laemmerzahl of Washington, D.C.
