Arthur Lyle Hewitt was born in Cornell, Wisconsin on August 30, 1919. His parents Ida and Wilbur Hewitt homesteaded with Art and his older sister Alice in Saco, Bowdoin Montana until 1924 when the young family moved backed to Cornell, Wisconsin and Elsie, Robert, and Helen Hewitt were born and attended a one room school house. The Hewitts moved to League City in 1936 (pop 850). In October 1940 Art joined the army and rode a motor for two years with the 56th Cavalry Brigade. At this point, he went to aviation cadet training in California and became a bombardier. While going to the Harley Davidson Factory for mechanic training for a month, Arthur met LaVerne while at a USO party sponsored by his future wife's parents, Albert and Sophie Umenthum. Arthur had training in Mt Home, Idaho and Fresno, California on B-24's. He went to Africa and Cerignola, Italy in 1943 with the 15th Army Air Corp and was shot down over Linz, Austria at the Herman Goring Tank Works. He spent a year at Stalag Luft III as a POW and was liberated by General George Patton. Arthur returned and married LaVerne the love of his life. They lived in Milwaukee where dad received his machinist certification through an apprenticeship through Allis Chalmers. Four years later they moved back to League City, Texas. Arthur worked 32 years at Monsanto Chemical Plant as a machinist in Texas City. Arthur and LaVerne loved to travel with their family and their friends in the Unwinder Camping group. He was a member of the League City Fire Department since 1950. It was his second home and all the firefighters were his extended family. Arthur is preceded in death by his beloved wife LaVerne of 63 years. He is survived by his son Richard A. Hewitt and his wife Janice, their two sons Andrew and Daniel, daughters; Judith A. Monthy and two children Laura and Garrett, Joanne L. MacTavish and her husband Scott and their daughter Liz. Along with seven great grandchildren, and his sister Elise Burd.
