Arthur Y. Altman, 91, of Albany NY passed suddenly on April 10, 2012, just three weeks shy of his 92nd birthday. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Mildred (Shapiro) and by sons Frederick of Albany (Karen Mayer) and Richard of Swan Lake, NY. He is also survived by his older brother and life-long business partner Abe; four grandsons: Stephen, Eric, Gregory and David, and by many nieces and nephews. Arthur Y. Altman, 91, of Albany NY passed suddenly on April 10, 2012, just three weeks shy of his 92nd birthday. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Mildred (Shapiro) and by sons Frederick of Albany (Karen Mayer) and Richard of Swan Lake, NY.
He is also survived by his older brother and life-long business partner Abe; four grandsons: Stephen, Eric, Gregory and David, and by many nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Clara Schwartz and Esther Sucher are pre-deceased.
Born on May 2, 1920 in Saskatchewan, Canada to Joseph and Rachel Altman, Arthur spent most of his life in the Bronx and Queens, NY before moving to Swan Lake and then Albany. A retired carpenter-contractor, cabinet-maker and lumber yard proprietor, Arthur was also a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the in the Pacific theater. He retired from the US Army Reserve at the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Arthur was devoted to his family, his country and his faith. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and was an active skier until age 75. He also enjoyed coin and stamp collecting and was an accomplished artist. His oil paintings have been exhibited in shows in Swan Lake, NY, Palm Beach, Florida, and most recently, at the Massry Residence in Albany.
A quick wit with a great appreciation for same, Arthur was a compelling and entertaining story-teller/raconteur and his laughter enlivened any room. An avid reader of the news, Arthur also always enjoyed a spirited discussion of the events of the day.
An inspirational man of quiet strength, great generosity and impeccable integrity Arthur is and will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends, to whom he was always seen as a super-man.
A memorial service will be held on Long Island on Sunday, April 15th followed by interment in the family plot.
