Arthur Cazares was born Arturo Cazares on October 9, 1917 in El Paso, TX to Joseph (Jose) and Maria Cazares. His family moved to the Los Angeles area soon after his birth. He was one of nine siblings. Art started running track while attending Garfield High School, and received national recognition in the one and two-mile events while competing for Pasadena Junior College. In his first year at Fresno State, he won the 1 and 2-mile CCAA titles. His 2nd year, he won the 2-mile title again against the best runners in the country. He also won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Crown, followed by his best 2-mile time of 9:05.2 in AAU, Pacific Association meet held in San Francisco. He was never defeated in intercollegiate competition.
After college, Art entered the Army Air Corp. for a short period, training as an aviation cadet. He was honorably discharged when a spot was found on his lung that they suspected was TB. Art then began his career as an Air Traffic Controller, starting in St. George, Utah, working in a shed. His assignment consisted of communicating air traffic information to airliners passing overhead. He then worked as an Air Traffic Controller in 11 different airports in 15 years, including San Francisco and L.A. Art concluded his career working as the FAA Representative assigned to Castle Air Force Base in Atwater, CA for 15 years.
During these years, Art met and married Bonnie McDuffey. They had one son, Chris Cazares, and soon settled in Merced, CA after his birth. After retirement, Art became involved in many hobbies, including photography (he even installed his own darkroom), sailing (at one time, was the Commodore at Lake Yosemite), and traveling (especially Spain and Catalina Island). In-between travels, he settled in Fuengirola (Spain), Las Vegas (Nevada), and Clearwater (Florida) for multiple years. Once his grandchildren, Kristen and Matthew Cazares were born, he included trips to Merced twice a year and took the family on multiple cruises. No matter where he was, Art called his son and grandkids every Sunday at 5p.m. to catch up and talk about where he was headed next.
Arthur is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Viola, Marta, Margaret, Cora and Sally and brothers, Edmund, Joe and Gabriel.
He is survived by his son, Chris; daughter-in-law, Kitty; grandchildren, Kristen and Matthew, all of Merced; and also by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, who live throughout California, most in the L.A. area.
Art will be remembered as being the patriarch of the Cazares family. His love and adoration for his family knew no boundary; he always had time to talk and loved to visit with everyone (no matter what age). Special thanks goes to Laura Jennings (great-niece) and her family for opening their home during his last days, Lee Jennings and Tiffany McConnell (nieces) for the MANY hours sitting at his bedside providing comfort, and Vitas Hospice of Huntington Beach.
A memorial service will be held Friday, August 1, 2014 at 12:00pm at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, 1490 B St., Merced, CA 95341. Father John Schmoll, a long-time family friend, will officiate. An honor guard will also be present.
Arrangements under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, Merced, CA.
