Audrea Sullivan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2017.

Audrea Meyer Sullivan passed on August 2, surrounded by family, at Rosewood Village Hollymead, Charlottesville, Virginia. Audrea was born October 28, 1929, one day before” Black Tuesday”, the day the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. While times were tough then, they could not have produced a more positive person than Audrea. From an early age through her last few years when her health declined, Audrea’s thankful spirit was unmissable; she always had a bright smile and a kind word for everyone.

Born in the house she grew up in on E. Liberty Avenue in Hillsdale, New Jersey, Audrea loved her family dearly, her parents Edna and Alexander, her brothers, Alexander and Walter and sisters, Edna and Dorothy. At an early age, Audrea wanted to be a doctor. She attended George G. White School and Park Ridge High School. But her dreams of attending medical school didn’t materialize after her father Alexander was tragically killed at his job as mechanic when Audrea was 14. But Audrea’s positive outlook and thankful spirit prevailed. She graduated high school early and found a job as a key punch operator with Esso Standard Oil at Rockefeller Center in New York City, helping her family carry on.

Not long after the war ended, Audrea met and on June 5, 1948, married the love of her life, Robert Sullivan, her Navy “flyboy” who had recently graduated from New York University. Robert found a job and his eventual career in insurance. Audrea found her ultimate career raising their three children. Robert and Audrea were married 62 years until his death in 2010. They lived in Audrea’s home town of Hillsdale, New Jersey, 41 years, before retiring to Lake Monticello near Charlottesville, Virginia, and then Ormond Beach and Bradenton, Florida. Audrea moved back to Charlottesville in 2016 to be closer to her children.

Audrea loved her family dearly and loved life. She enjoyed playing piano and oil painting and was very talented at both. She loved to swim and as a teen became a life guard. Years later she put those skills to work when she realized her dream of her own pool in the back yard of the family home on Hopkins Street, a mile from where she grew up. Audrea also loved to travel and dine out. She and Bob enjoyed trips to the Western US and Canada as well as to England, France and New Zealand.

Audrea was preceeded in death by her husband Bob and all of her and his sisters and brothers. She is survived by her three loving children: Brian Sullivan of Mechanicsville, VA, Keryn Mikkelsen of Palmyra,VA and Craig Sullivan of Atlanta, GA as well as five grandchildren who will all miss her dearly.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11AM, Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church, 4133 Earlysville Rd, Earlysville, VA. Audrea's family would be honored if you would sign the Guest Book.

There are so many memories to recall when it comes to my teenage, high school years and the time spent at the Sullivan house ... from hanging out by the pool on summer days, to playing Battleship at the kitchen table or just chatting in the living room at Christmas time with their unique silvery blue holiday tree. Definitely a more 'mellow' mom than my own, her calm and gentle demeanor was matched by an incredible smile and twinkle in her eyes that let you know that she was not one to be a pushover when it came to our teenage shenanigans. Her compassion and infectious laugh will not be forgotten. Her children's and our collective loss is heaven's gain.

My most sincere condolences on
the passing of Audrea. I didn't know her for a long period of time but her sweet smile and warm kindness immediately made us good friends. Her sense of humor was contagious. A pleasure to know. She is already sorely missed.

What a great lady and first class human being! I spent so many days at the Sullivan house and so much time in her presence growing up. She and her wonderful family helped to define my teen years. Knowing that she never lost her love of people or her love of life comes as no surprise. I truly hope Craig and the entire family find comfort in celebrating who she was and the fact that she will be in all of our hearts forever, especially theirs.

I spent a lot of time at the Sullivan house when I was in high school. Mrs. Sullivan was always welcoming and usually had a good story to tell. I'm sure she will be missed. My best goes out to the entire family whom I had the pleasure of seeing last year at Craig's wedding. Kim & Ralph Wolckenhauer
