Barbara Lou Grothe, 87, of Des Moines, Washington, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2012, after a brief illness. Barbara was born on June 12, 1925, in Wichita, Kansas, the only child of William and Margaret (Philbin) Blaine. She earned her bachelor's degree in journalism from Kansas State University where she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, and it was here that she met and married Gerald Herbert Grothe. They were married on September 11, 1946. For their first few years of married life, Barbara and Gerald traveled around the country wherever Gerald's jobs took them. They eventually settled in the Seattle area in the early '50's. Barbara worked in various capacities in the journalism field. Later in her life, Barbara worked for King County. Before and after retirement, Barbara enjoyed a busy social life, full of get-togethers with family and friends. She was active in her church, enjoyed garden club, playing bridge, and helping young women to achieve their educational goals through her involvement with P.E.O. Most of all she loved to laugh, tell stories, and generously share her time and love with the people in her life. Along with loving her own family, she had room in her heart to be a surrogate mom and granny to many others. She will be missed by all who had the privilege and joy of knowing her.
