Paranzino, Barbara, 67, of Port Orange passed away April 2, 2013 at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. Barbara, a lifelong educator and mentor to many, was born February 8, 1946 in New Castle, PA. She was the daughter of the late Ann and Thomas Joseph. After graduating from Duquesne University in 1968, Barbara was given an opportunity to travel to Europe. It is there where she met her husband, Robert, to whom she was married in 1971. She began her career as an educator in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Port Orange in 1981. She taught at Port Orange Elementary and Horizon Elementary. After several years of teaching, she was promoted to Administrative Assistant at Horizon and served as Assistant Principal at George Marks Elementary. As Principal, Barbara Paranzino was the underlying heartbeat of Pine Trail Elementary School for eighteen years. She truly understood that children learn best in a safe, friendly environment where children come first every day in every decision. Her modeling, mentoring and creativity ignited, then fostered a passion for education that pushed each teacher to go above and beyond in helping students. She was the developer and creator of the RAP (Reading Aloud with Partners) reading program which matched at-risk readers with a reading partner from the community. She championed the implementation of a school-wide character building program based on Lifeskills needed for a lifetime, such as integrity, responsibity and caring. She was named Teacher of the Year at Port Orange Elementary and Principal of the Year at Pine Trail. She was a dedicated educator and mentor to both students and associates. As an enduring tribute to her dedication to students and teachers, the Pine Trail Media Center was renamed the Barbara Paranzino Memorial Library in her honor. Her legacy lives on in the hundreds of teachers she inspired and the thousands of children she loved. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 41 years, Robert; brothers, Tom (Marcie) Joseph and John Joseph; sisters, Carole (John) Wierzbicki and Irene (John) Bauer; her Yorkies Charlotte, Finn and Lily and numerous nieces and nephews friends and associates. Friends may call Friday 2-4 & 6-9 PM at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd. Port Orange. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 10:00 AM at Epiphany Catholic Church 201 Lafayette St, Port Orange. Entombment will follow at Volusia Memorial Park, Ormond Beach. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.volusiamemorialfuneral.com
