A child of the Great Depression, she graduated from Hanover High School in Wilkes-Barre, and then went on to become a Registered Nurse in 1942 graduating from Kings County Hospital School of Nursing in New York City.

On January 22, 1943, she married Everett G. Stook at the Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan, with Dr. Norman Vincent Peale officiating.
