Bennye Wayne Gulley went to be with our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 after 98 years of living life as a role model and Christian witness to everyone he met. He is survived by his wife, Lola May McMinn Gulley, with whom he spent 74 love-filled years, 2 daughters, Martha Farr, and her husband, Greg, and Jayne Knighton, and her husband, Neal, 3 grandsons, and 5 great grandchildren.
Growing up in the Texas panhandle town of Wellington, and as the youngest of 12 children on a farm, he would often recount the humorous stories of his youth as the youngest boy with sisters trying to take over the role of being his mother. Tales of the family hand-me-down clothing and being forced to learn to how to quilt as punishment for skipping school were two of his favorite memories. Shortly after marrying Lola in 1943, he joined the Navy to serve his country during World War II as an aircraft electrician.
He considered the birth of his daughters, grandsons, and great grandchildren, to be the highlights of his legacy.
Wayne loved spending time in his cherished second home, a cabin he built in Red River, New Mexico.
Outside of family, Wayne was an active member of his church and sought to serve and glorify the Lord through volunteer and mission work. Even as he got on in years, he made sure to find a way to serve the Lord as he was able. Every Sunday he could be found at Richland Hills Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. While he wasn’t a natural born singer, he loved to sing hymns from the pews while holding Lola’s hand.
Wayne was also an active member of his Masonic Lodge and helped to raise the Masonic Lodge in Puerto Rico in 1942. He became a Master Mason in 1943 at the age of 24.
After a career with the Federal Government, Wayne went on to work as a master electrician and custom home contractor.
He retired in 1983 so he could spend more time with his grandchildren. He loved woodworking, hunting, and fishing. He loved to share these activities with his grandsons, and would often stop work on one of his own projects to help them with one of theirs.
Wayne Gulley will be remembered as a loving, Godly, selfless man who always put the needs of others before his own.
In lieu of flowers the family encourages charitable gifts to one of Wayne’s favorite charities, Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief, 5351 Catron Dr, Dallas, TX 75227, 214-275-1116 or by visiting their website at www.texasbaptistmen.org .

This obituary is such an accurate description of the kind of man he was. He was always kind and giving. He always wanted to know how others were doing even when he was in pain. I cherish the little stool he made for me as a child and will always remember when I was working at the federal building in the summer between Baylor semesters and he took me out to lunch. I felt so special! I love you Uncle Wayne. I'm sure you are rejoicing in heaven.
