Bernadine Aretta Porter, 96, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday September 30, 2017 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. She was born on March 31, 1921 in Christopher, Illinois to Robert H. and Allia Bell Stowers Lowery. Bernadine married John R. Porter Sr., in 1947 in Christopher and he preceded her in death on May 7, 1996.
Mrs. Porter is survived by her son John R. (Mary) Porter Jr., of Springfield, one daughter-in-law Barb Porter of Washington State, eleven grandchildren: Ben (Melody) Porter, Aaron (Lindsey) Porter, Pam, Rose, Marshall, Wade and Justin Porter, Susan (Brent) Swensen, John W. (Jackie) Porter, James (Cori) Porter and Debi (Jim) Harris, twenty five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her son Donald Lee Porter and six brothers and sisters.
Bernadine worked at Emerson Electric in St. Louis during World War II where she helped manufacture and assemble fire arms for the war effort. She then worked for Sangamon County copying documents on and off of microfilm and she retired from Kmart as a supervisor in 1986 after fifteen years of service. She enjoyed reading, sewing, roller skating and collecting cat figurines and she was a member of Capitol Christian Church which became Faith Bible Church.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30am on Tuesday October 3, 2017 at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen, with burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 10:30am until the time of service Tuesday at Bisch and Son. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Bible Church and please visit the online "Life Remembered Story" at www.bischandsonfuneralhome.com.
