Bertha Hogen-Esch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 29, 2017.

Bertha Catharina "Bep" Hogen-Esch, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died peacefully in her sleep on August 27, 2017 at age 92, in Ventura, California.

An award-winning painter and sculptor, Bep was born May 21, 1925, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where she learned her love of art from her artist father. She studied at the prestigious Hendrick de Keyser Art School in Amsterdam. After immigrating to the US in 1954 with her husband and children, Bep furthered her skills through classwork at local colleges and through workshops with noted painters and sculptors. In addition to being a talented artist, Bep became a respected art teacher.

She raised her family in Sylmar, California, in an atmosphere of love, fun and creativity. Bep and her husband, Cor, were active in school, scouts, little theater, local concerts, art shows, and many other community activities. They traveled together all over the world and spent many happy miles camping in their vacation trailer. She was devastated when he died too young but pulled herself together and made a life on her own.

In 2000, Bep moved to Ventura where she became an active member in the local artist community including the Buenaventura Art Association and Focus on the Masters. She also found her community at the UU Church of Ventura, and she loved leading the "mermaids" in exercises at the Rancho Ventura pool.

Despite Bep's many accomplishments, her greatest joy came from being a mother. Although her experiences in Nazi-occupied Holland could have made her hard and bitter, she chose to embrace the humanity and inherent goodness in all people. Her love, wisdom, optimism and generosity of spirit inspired all who knew her.

Mama, we will miss your hugs and kisses and your radiant loving smile.

Bep is survived by her four children; Matty Park, Roelf Jan Hogen-Esch and his wife Robin, Elizabeth MacPherson and her husband Marc, Henk Hogen-Esch and his husband Vernon Nunley; her seven grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.

Bep was preceded in death by her husband Cornelis "Cor" Hogen-Esch on April 27, 1993.

A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2017, 1:00 pm, at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, in Ventura.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to TedMayrFuneralHome.com.

Bette Gruben

I will always remember the fun times we had making art together (especially jewelry) and decorating the house with the Hogen-Esch family in Sylmar for Halloween. She and Cor were always so sweet and both the type of people who made you feel good just by being in the same room with you. Both of you lived a good life and we are all better for having known you.
