Cherished Sister, Aunt and Great Aunt. Bette R. Lewis, nee Saums, died Monday, June 2, 2014 at Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington, New Jersey. Bette was born on October 14, in Newark, New Jersey, a daughter of the late George and Lydia Saums. Bette grew up in Newark, NJ, lived in Patterson, NJ and then lived most of her life in Union County New Jersey. In the last several years, she has been a resident of Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington, NJ. Bette R. Lewis, nee Saums, died Monday, June 2, 2014 at Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington, New Jersey.

Bette was born on October 14, in Newark, New Jersey, a daughter of the late George and Lydia Saums. Bette grew up in Newark, NJ, lived in Patterson, NJ and then lived most of her life in Union County New Jersey. In the last several years, she has been a resident of Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington, NJ.

Bette is predeceased by two sisters and one brother, Ruth Wall of Westmont, NJ, Janet Marty-Love of Union, New Jersey and Quentin Saums of Newark, New Jersey.

Surviving are her two nieces, Gail Conway of Lindenwold, NJ, Jackie Mello and her husband Bob Mello of Flemington, NJ and a nephew Jeffrey Marty and wife Heidi Marty of Mechanicsville, VA as well as many great nieces and nephews.

Bette was employed for 45 years with Public Service Coordinated Transport/NJ Transit in Maplewood, NJ as a senior bookkeeper. She served as Secretary for the Company's Brass Club for retired members. She was a member of the Christian Business and Professional Women's Association and Springfield Senior Citizens. Bette was active in community organizations taking on leadership roles such as Girl Scout Leader and Sunday School Secretary as a member of First Presbyterian Church of Springfield. She enjoyed knitting baby outfits, afghans, and sweaters. Jig saw puzzles, travelling, planting flower gardens, church activities, taking photos, and reading were among Bette's favorite pastimes.

A two hour visitation with prayer service will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Avenue, Union, NJ. Internment will follow at 11:00 am at Hollywood Memorial Cemetery in Union New Jersey.
