Our beautiful Mom and Grandma, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Gonya Kruse of Upland, was born December 15, 1923, in West Hartford, Connecticut, and passed away on August 20, 2014. On March 15, 1925, she was lovingly adopted by Edward and Amy Ouelette Gonya, of Waterbury, Connecticut. Betty grew up in Waterbury, graduating in 1941 from Wilby High School where she was a top student, a flag carrier, Senior Class Secretary, and voted "Most All Around Girl."
On May 30, 1942, she married Richard Allen "Dick" Kruse of Waterbury.. He joined the Marines, and she began working for Waterbury Tool. When he returned, they started their family, and after around 14 years, Dick finally convinced Betty to move out to California. They packed up their three children in the station wagon and made it to Glendora in the summer of 1959. They bought a house in Montclair, and the family lived there from 1960-1986 when Betty moved to Upland.
Betty worked at several jobs , including as a legal secretary for John B. Selters, and as a clerk in the Ontario-Montclair School District, finally retiring in the 80's.
Her passion in life was her family. She liked nothing more than being with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Betty wanted to be included in everything! She was the best Grandma cheerleader for all of her grandkids sports and activities. Traveling was one of her loves, going to places like Europe and the Caribbean with her Connecticut girlfriends, and going to local places with her friends from around here. She was an avid UCLA fan with season tickets to football. Betty enjoyed her time as a Montclair Walker and as part of the Montclair Walker Choral group. She always loved her pets, reading, her soaps and TV, and food.
She touched many lives with her friends, her children's friends, and her grandchildren's friends. They always found her entertaining, generous, friendly, and lovable.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Richard "Dick" Kruse, and a grandson, Ryan Chapman. She is survived by her daughter Betty (Jim) Chapman of Rancho Cucamonga, her son Richard W. Kruse of Los Angeles, her daughter Debbie Kruse (Ray Simmons) of Upland, grandson Scott (Dione) Chapman of Huntington Beach, granddaughters Kristin Chapman of Rancho Cucamonga, Jordan Simmons of San Diego, and Kiran Simmons of Upland. Great grandchildren are Jack, Luc, and Emery Chapman of Huntington Beach, and
Kayla and Aiden Chapman of Rancho Cucamonga.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions be made to VNA Hospice of Southern California, 150 W. First St., Suite 270, Claremont, CA 91711.
Visitation is on Monday, September 1, (Labor Day) from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at Draper Mortuary, 811 N. Mountain Ave., Ontario 91762, and the funeral will be on Tuesday, September 2, at 11:00 A.M., also at Drapers. The burial will be private.
