Obituary

Betty Jean Sellers Barfield, 75, of Columbia, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2012 with her loving family by her side. Born in Olar, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Jacob William Sellers and Julia Mae Gilliam Sellers. Mrs. Barfield was formerly a member of Denny Terrace Baptist Church and in recent years Belmont Baptist Church. She was retired from the VA Regional Office where she served in a number of positions. A volunteer for numerous local organizations, Mrs. Barfield was also a board member of the V.A.R.O. Credit Union and a member of the Midlands Intertribal Empowerment Group (M.I.E.G.). Betty Jean Sellers Barfield, 75, of Columbia, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2012 with her loving family by her side. Born in Olar, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Jacob William Sellers and Julia Mae Gilliam Sellers.

Mrs. Barfield was formerly a member of Denny Terrace Baptist Church and in recent years Belmont Baptist Church. She was retired from the VA Regional Office where she served in a number of positions. A volunteer for numerous local organizations, Mrs. Barfield was also a board member of the V.A.R.O. Credit Union and a member of the Midlands Intertribal Empowerment Group (M.I.E.G.).

Survivors include her son, Danny G. Barfield, II of Columbia; daughter, Tonya Barfield (Waylon Gene) Oswald; granddaughters, Elizabeth Danielle Oswald, Billie Carol Oswald; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Danny G. Barfield, Sr., six brothers, and one sister.

The funeral service for Mrs. Barfield will be held at 2 o'clock, Saturday, February 11, 2012, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Dr., Columbia, with The Rev. Brenda Lynn Kneece and The Rev. Harry S. Girtman officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Gardens of Columbia. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at noon. Memorials may be made to the Belmont Baptist Church Bible Fund, 901 Mason Rd., Columbia, SC 29203.
