Obituary

Betty Jean Cofer departed this good earth for her heavenly home on June 30, 2014. Betty was born on May 23, 1931 in Stephens County (Toccoa, Ga.) to Mr. and Mrs. Willis Alton and Beatrice Cheek. The Cheek family can trace their roots back to a U.S. Revolutionary War hero recognized by the new U.S government and given a pension for his service. Betty graduated from the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta. Betty had a distinguished nursing career both in civilian sector and with the United States Army Nurse Corp. Betty Jean Cofer departed this good earth for her heavenly home on June 30, 2014. Betty was born on May 23, 1931 in Stephens County (Toccoa, Ga.) to Mr. and Mrs. Willis Alton and Beatrice Cheek. The Cheek family can trace their roots back to a U.S. Revolutionary War hero recognized by the new U.S government and given a pension for his service. Betty graduated from the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta.
Betty had a distinguished nursing career both in civilian sector and with the United States Army Nurse Corp. After professional assignments in Atlanta and New Orleans, Betty accepted a commission in the United States Army Nurse Corp (ANC) in 1964. Betty's assignments were always in critical care, both at the Intensive Care Unit of Womack Army Hospital in Fort Bragg N.C. and at the US Army Burn Center at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. After a thirteen year hiatus to raise her children, Betty returned to nursing in Cardiac Care and Hyper-Baric medicine at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta.
Betty had four children with Colonel (Retired) A. Mason Ahearn, M.D. : John Mason Ahearn, Ella Lee Ahearn, Peter Cheek Ahearn (deceased), Susan Elizabeth Ahearn. Upon retirement to Athens, Ga. in 1996, Betty met and married her true soul mate, Hal Lewis Cofer, Jr., owner of Cofer's Home and Garden Center. They have shared 15 wonderful years of marriage and friendship.
Mrs. Cofer was an active communicant and Vestry Member in the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Orangeburg, SC and an active communicant at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, Ga. At Emmanuel, she was awarded "Faithful Servant Award" for her many years of dedicated service to the parish.
She is predeceased by her parents, Willis Alton Cheek and Beatrice Lee Sosbee Cheek; siblings Nell Whittington, Sue Shirley and Willis "Bunk" Alton Cheek, Jr. and son, Peter Cheek Ahearn (Arlington National Cemetery). She is survived by her husband, Hal Lewis Cofer, Jr.; children, John Mason Ahearn(Sandy), Ella Lea Ahearn(Timothy), Susan Elizabeth Ahearn; step-sons, Phillip Sanders Cofer(Cathy) and Stuart Alexander Cofer(Carol); and grandchildren, John Mason Ahearn II, Maggie Nell Ahearn, Sheridan Lee Ahearn, Weber Mason Whelan, Bette Francis Whelan, Taylor Brandon Hale, Trenton Baxter Hale, Cameron Bryce Hale, Sheridan Sale Cofer, Stephen Alexander Cofer, Catherine Thomas, Jacob Rayburn, Catherine Jean Cofer and Sara Elizabeth Cofer.
Betty's church family was a vital part of her life in Athens. The Cofer family would like to acknowledge their appreciation for their love and support.
