Betty J. Owens, the beloved wife of Cal Owens, passed gently into heaven Wednesday evening, March 20, 2014, surrounded by her husband and friends. She died at home in Rome, GA, at the age of 71, following a long battle with cancer.

A native of Columbus, Georgia, she was educated in the public school system of Muskogee County, Georgia and entered Columbus College (now Columbus State University) after being graduated from Baker High School in 1960. In her junior year she moved to the University Of Georgia where the Owens met at the Baptist Student Union. They were married June 21, 1964, and would have celebrated their 50th Anniversary this year.

Following their marriage the Owens moved to Rome, and Mrs. Owens went to work for the Rome City Schools where she taught for 36 years. She taught sixth grade social studies at Fourth Ward and Elm Street Elementary Schools. Returning later to West Georgia University, she earned her Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling and continued her work at Elm Street and West Central Elementary Schools, West Rome High and East Rome Junior High. Always a big reader, Mrs. Owens again went back to West Georgia University and earned her Education Specialist Degree in Library Sciences and worked at Elm Street Elementary until her retirement.

Betty was a member of the Floyd-Rome Retired Educators Association; at St. Mary's Catholic Church she participated in the Ladies Rosary Group, the Altar Society and the Ladies Auxiliary. She touched more lives than one can imagine in the church and in the community.

She is survived by her husband, Cal, Rome, Georgia, her stepmother June Hamilton, Pine Mountain, Georgia, sister Mary Myers, Jacksonville, Florida, brothers Dan Childs, Gadsden, Alabama, Ronnie Childs, Pine Mountain, Georgia, niece Barbara Smith, Jacksonville, Florida, nephew John Myers, Stockbridge, GA, sister-in-law Susan Minton, Gadsden, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her mother, Doris Hamilton, Columbus, Georgia, and by her father, John Hamilton, Pine Mountain, Georgia.

The Owens have resided in Maplewood since 1970.

Rosary Service and Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Daniels Funeral Home, Rome. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Monday, March 24, at noon with Fr. Patrick Kingery officiating, assisted by Deacon Stuart Neslin. Graveside Services and interment will immediately follow in the Memorial Garden of St. Mary's Church. A Reception will then follow in the church's parish hall.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord. Amen.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary's Catholic Church maintenance fund, 911 North Broad St., Rome, GA 30161.
