Beverley Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2013.

SMITH, Beverley June (nee-Shaver)

Peacefully with her family at her side, at PRHC Palliative Care on Saturday, May 11, 2013, in her 66th year, after a valiant, graceful, and often successful battle with ovarian cancer. Greatest mother ever of Tim (Marina), Julie, Brian (Staci) and Amy. Beloved 'Gromo' and 'Baba' of Owen, Leah and Miles. Beloved daughter of Nellie and the late Wilson Shaver and cherished sister of Valerie Vickers (John), Rena Retallick (Paul) and the late Elizabeth Moore. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews and a legion of wonderful friends. Bev was a much-loved ICU and Labour & Delivery registered nurse at Peterborough Civic Hospital for close to 35 years, work to which she was joyfully dedicated. Friends may call to COMSTOCK FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE (356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough) for a memorial visitation on Thursday, May 16, 2013 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. A celebration of Bev's life will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Grace United Church (581 Howden Avenue) at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Grace United Church Food Bank http://www.graceunited.ca/viewcustompage.php?id=8414 or a charity of choice would be greatly appreciated. On-line condolences may be made at www.comstockfuneralhome.com.

Julie,

Bev was an EXTRAORDINARY woman. I know that not only because I had the good fortune to spend a bit of time in her presence, but also because of who you are.

Thinking of you, Amy and the rest of your family as you celebrate your wonderful mother today.

We are so sorry for the loss of your wonderful Mom and Gromo. I think that the smiles in her pictures here really capture her beautiful spirit. It's not surprising that she chose Nursing as her profession. While I didn't know her well, I had met her enough times to feel her genuine heart, enjoy her delightful sense of humour and see her caring and nurturing ways. I certainly see all of her qualities in you Amy and I know that your siblings are blessed with her countless qualities too. Her tireless efforts to champion causes for those who are less fortunate and those in need, whether it be her patients or people in any kind of need at all, allowed her children to grow up knowing what is truly important in life. She set the stage for all the wonderful things that her children and grandchildren have done, and will continue to do. I know she is your rock, and she will continue to be. She will be with you always, helping you and guiding you. Moms like yours have a presence that doesn't stop, ever. I know that you will miss her so dearly and you will cherish so many wonderful memories of all the time you spent together. I also know that she has given you strength that you don't even know you have yet, but you will, as you think of her when you're living your life to its fullest. You have her smile. You have her boundless capacity to love and nurture. You have her wisdom and her gentle spirit. You have her in your heart, forever, and she will never leave you. I wish you peace as you move forward and continue to make her proud, being the incredible young woman that you are. She was your first and best teacher and you will share that with all of those you love and all of those that you will meet in the future. So you sing when you're baking her ‘best banana bread ever' and you smile when you're filling jars with pickles that she taught you how to make. You continue on in her tradition with a fighting spirit and loving heart. Please know that I'm always here to listen and to share. I love you girl! The whole Kemp family sends condolences. xoxoxoxoxo

Julie Smith-- A mother of unique loving qualities, with goodwill and strength at her core, and a view of life and people that finds the best and celebrates it in small, powerful ways... this is what I think I know of your mom just by seeing her through you and in you over the years. You emulated her and she clearly had a very positive influence on the person you became. I think you have been a wonderful testament to your mother's amazing presence. You always spoke so fondly of her. I suspect she was outstanding as nurse, mother, and as a person. I could see that in the way you talked about her. What a legacy she has left you guys. And what great memories you will have to remember her. I am sorry for you. You will miss her. But you had great years together and I have been glad to know of her through you. She always sounded to me like someone special --- who gives humanity a good name through her good heartedness. My thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time, Jules.

I have the fondest memories of Bev. She was my mentor and role model during my ICU rotation as a student nurse. Bev was always patient, kind and thoughtful... and wonderfully intuitive. I know she will be sorely missed.
My deepest sympathies to Bev's family and friends.

Bev was truly one of a kind- she saw the best in everyone, she always had positive words to say, went about life with a beautiful smile and an open heart. Bev- it was such a pleasure to have been a classmate and to have had the opportunity to know you. Heaven has an extraordinary Angel, now that you are there.

I was sadden to hear of Bev's passing. We were part of the church family at St. Andrews in Cobourg. I was pleased when she came to PCH that I was given the honour of being her Big Sister. We saw each other occasionally over the years. She was truly a wonderful woman & nurse. She had the best roll model possible for both in her mother. My thoughts are with you.

Not only the greatest Mum but also a great classmate - delightful to work with, delightful to live with. She deserved all the luck she had with ovarian cancer - a fighter & a survivor. Never negative about anyone, always a helpful problem solver, always a smile in any situation. Kind, caring, loving & fun! Nothing about her death seems fair at this time for me. Truly an honour to have known her for such a short time. So ssorry I can't be there for her memorial but my thoughts are with her lovely family & friends.
