Bill Krenz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2010.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Bill Krenz, editor and co-founder of Inside Archery and Bowhunt America magazines.

William N. "Bill" Krenz, age 58, died December 13, 2010, unexpectedly in his home in Colorado Springs, CO. Bill was born on December 12, 1952, in Black River Falls, WI, the first of three children born to Norman and Eleanor (Danz) Krenz. Bill developed a passion for archery and the outdoors early on. He graduated from Black River Falls High School in 1971 and from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire in 1975 in preparation for a career in education. He quickly realized, however, that his true calling was working, living and breathing the archery and outdoor industry.

Bill began his career in the archery industry as a freelance writer for various archery magazines and later worked in marketing for some of the leading archery equipment manufacturers, including PSE, Hoyt, and Bear Archery. Over the past 33 years, the archery industry has known him as an industry leader, a marketing genius, and a brilliant writer and editor. In 1988, he met fellow archery industry leader Sherry Murphy. The two were married on July 20, 1991, in Salt Lake City, UT.

In 1998, Bill and Sherry founded Zebra Publishing Inc. and launched Inside Archery, a trade magazine for the archery industry. Bill, with his extensive technical knowledge of archery equipment, his familiarity with the archery industry and his ability to craft clear, engaging articles, served as the editor of Inside Archery. Following the success of Inside Archery, Bill and Sherry launched Bowhunt America, a consumer bowhunting magazine in 2003. Once again, Bill served as editor, and his concise, answer-driven articles resonated with bowhunters all over the country. Due to Bill's tireless work, Bowhunt America has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing consumer publications in the country.

A passionate and accomplished hunter, Bill was one of the first bowhunters to take all five species of North American deer with a bow, breaking at least one world record in the process. He has hunted all over the world and is considered one of the most widely traveled and successful bowhunters in the modern era. Decades ago, Bill became one of the youngest Regular members, and then Senior members, of the Pope and Young Club. He has also served with distinction on the Board of Directors of the California Bowman Hunters, the Pope and Young Club and the Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization (Archery Trade Association).

Bill will be remembered for his willingness to help other archers and bowhunters, for his dedication to promoting archery and bowhunting, and for his ability to tell a good story. Through his writing, Bill touched thousands of archers. For those who knew him personally, he was a mentor, a source of inspiration, a provider of sage advice, and a friend.

Most importantly, Bill will be remembered as a devoted husband, a supportive and encouraging father, and the most beloved grandfather.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sherry, children, Tracey Reginek (Colorado Springs), Travis (Heather) Reginek (Salt Lake City, UT), Tyler Reginek (Colorado Springs), Tara Reginek (Denver, CO), four grandchildren, Rachael, Colton, Maquel and Isabelle, mother, Eleanor Krenz (Black River Falls, WI), brother, Robert Krenz (Turtle Lake, WI), sister Linda (Scott) Nicastro (Mondovi, WI), mother-in-law, Vi Murphy (Sauk Rapids, MN), sisters- and brothers-in-law Deb and Leon Lechner (Baxter, MN), Becky and Warren Christie (Kimball, MN), Tim & Beth Murphy (Colorado Springs, CO), Joe and Suzanne Murphy (Clearwater, MN), Brian Murphy (Sauk Rapids, MN), many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Norman Krenz (Black River Falls, WI), and his father-in-law, Jack Murphy (Sauk Rapids, MN).

A visitation will be held Friday, December 17th, from 4:00-8:00 pm at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade, Colorado Springs, CO. The funeral services will begin Saturday, December 18th, at 11:00 am at the World Prayer Center at the New Life Church Campus, 11025 Voyager Parkway, Colorado Springs, CO 80921. There will be a visitation for family and friends one hour prior to the funeral service. There will be a post-service reception following the funeral services at the Krenz residence.

The obituary will appear online at www.mem.com. His family sincerely appreciates condolences and comments posted there about Bill.

Sherry and family,

I've spent the last several years working in the firearms industry and raising a family. This led me away from the archery industry. Only last week did I hear the news about Bill.
I am very sorry for your loss.

I consider Bill to be one of only three people that are most directly responsible for my successful career in the hunting industry.

While I was beginning my career in the industry with Darton Archery, I received a call from Bill whom, before that, I had not yet had the pleasure of knowing. He invited me down to interview with him as a candidate for his marketing director at Bear Archery. It wasn't long after that I found myself working for and becoming friends with one of the kindest, most considerate and helpful people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. When Bear underwent corporate downsizing, my day for elimination arrived and I was told that I'd be escorted from the building according to company policy. But as my friend and mentor, Bill would not stand for that. Instead, he helped me pack my things and carry them to my car, stopping to grab my parking sign on the way. As he handed me my parking sign, I'll never forget his parting words to me that day.

His words of wisdom were clear; view every step in my career as merely stepping stones for the ultimate prize at the summit. Pursue life with the same passion he saw from me while hunting together. Always look forward and never regret the path I took along the way. Learn something from every step. Always conduct yourself with honesty and integrity. Look adversity in the face and never sacrifice your dignity. And most important of all, don't believe "it's just business". Everything you do in life IS PERSONAL; How you react to every experience affects you, your family and everyone around you, either directly or indirectly.

As a young man just cutting his teeth in the business world, I never forgot his advice and my mind has gone back to our conversation to this very day.

Bill has touched more people than perhaps you will ever even know. For me, he will always carry a special place in my memories.

My best to you and your entire family.

It's uplifting to read the heartfelt memories so many have for Bill. As a brother, the childhood memories are forever. Special thanks to all of the hometown Krenz family friends from BRF for your expressions of sympathy and remembrances of Bill.

Dear Sherry,

It is with great sympathy that I had learned of Bill's passing. It was one of those experiences that I will never forget where I was or what I was doing when I herd the news.

During my time working for Bear Archery as a sales rep I had the good fortune to join Bill in a caribou camp in northern Quebec. It was a terrific hunt, and an opportunity to share the fellowship of a camp fire, and tell the hunting stories of adventures past. Bill was a great story teller.

You learn a lot about a person in a hunt camp... I learned that Bill would be a friend on any trail we ventured.

He was a great example of a person who was true to their values and belief's. He was always genuine in his conversation and advice. Something I appreciated and looked forward to when we chatted.

I am blessed and grateful for sharing that time in camp and enjoying his friendship for so many years.

Much love to you and your family.

Paul

Sherry:

Please accept my sincere condolences on the death of Bill. It was shocking and unexpected; as most deaths are. I knew Bill since I was about 5 years old. The Krenz's lived a half block from us and my older brother and I naturally gravitated toward other boys our age. (Bill and Bob)
I think my first vivid memory of Bill was when I learned how to ride my bike. (Actually it was his bike) He helped me up when I crashed. As kids we often played baseball, kickball, football, and ice skating down at Mill's hill. We weren't the best but boy did we have fun. Ah...those summer days of old. When we weren't playing sports we would be running the golf course, looking for golf balls for hours. One of our favorite pastimes was drowning and killing the gophers all over the course. We occasionally caddied or spotted balls at local tournaments. It was quite a sight to watch boys carrying target arrows and gallons of water all over the course. When we weren't doing that, we'd either be fishing down by the Black River dam, looking for lost lures, trapping fish in holes below the dam, or jumping off the dam or pier into the cool deep waters below.
Our parents both worked for the Black River school system (so we always had to be on our best behavior) and we'd picnic together out at Lake Arbutus. We never got tired of our dads throwing us over their shoulders into deeper waters. Bill and I loved to swim and we'd spend hours down at the local pool. Unfortunately, I spent most of my time being held underwater by a bigger and stronger Bill. Once in awhile he'd let me up long enough to dunk him. I learned how to hold my breath for a long time and I learned how to survive.
As we grew older we spent more and more time in the woods surrounding the golf course. We pretended to be big game hunters as we stalked grouse, rabbits, and squirrels with our cheap target bows and arrows. We even tried to hit birds on the ground and nighthawks in the air. I doubt if we ever hit one. We'd read our Outdoor Life and Sports Afield magazines and dream of being the next Fred Bear.
Since both our dad's were members of the local Lion's Club; we got to tag along with them a lot. In the mid 60's Black River hosted several state archery competitions. As rambunctious boys we were assigned trash cleanup duty. During downtime's at the events we scoured the ranges for lost arrows and we got to keep what we found! And these were nicely bladed arrows.
Bill and I played football at the high school together for four years. Since Bill was the second string quarterback and I was the fifth string end; we'd spend hours practicing our quick pitch and catch if we ever got the chance to use it. We played on basketball teams together but my favorite was being on the same track team together. I watched for hours, days, and years as he tried to pole vault 10 feet with an old, stiff, fiberglass pole. Don't know if he ever did it. And he watched as I struggled to break the 5 minute mile barrier.
After my brain tumor operation in high school I decided to go to UW-Eau Claire partly because Bill, my brother, and Bob were all going there. During my freshman year Bill and I entered a "Swim the Chippewa" pool program. We swam a certain number of laps equal to so many miles. In the end we both received a small trophy and t-shirt which we were so proud of. After my freshman year in college we seemed to go down two separate paths.
I'll never forget Bill's infectious smile and his boyish care free attitude. He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. I was lucky to have him as my friend.

To the Krenz Family...the recent discovery of Bill's passing affected me profoundly. I knew him only through his writings, and our correspondence about projects I proposed for Bowhunt America. His professionalism was always evident in either role, as writer or editor. His love for hunting and the outdoors was deep, and obviously a guiding force in his life and relationships. I'm sure family and friends miss him dearly, and the industry will, too. My deepest sympathies in this time of loss and sorrow.

Bill was an amazing man I will never forget. Whenever I called him, he would take the time to talk to me about writing, hunting, marketing and whatever else we could think of over the course of a long conversation. I work with dozens of editors and Bill was one of my favorites.
Bill always built people up, encouraged them and challenged them to achieve more. Bill didn’t just give me insight into the hunting industry; he gave me insight on life, family and so may other things. We live in a day and age where most people don’t make the time to inspire others, share their knowledge with others or simply lend an ear. That is what made Bill different. He had a business to run, deadlines to meet, and lots of irons in the fire, but he always took time for people because it was obvious people, not business, bowhunting or magazines mattered most to Bill Krenz. I will miss you Bill.

Greg Roes

Sherry and family,

As others have said and your family knows better than the rest of us; we are all poorer for the loss of such a generous, knowlegable and caring man.

Bill was a citizen of numerous communities, a man who would willingly share his wealth of knowledge to anyone whom asked. When you listened or read the lessons Bill shared, he would give you facts and educated opinions in such a way that you never felt belittled. You just knew he'd learned from experience and had tested and evaluated his hunches and theories to the point that his word could be taken as gospel.

His way with words and his continuous quest for knowledge made you realize he was probably the wisest, well-spoken kid (at heart) you'd ever meet.

I know I can speak for many that he will be greatly missed; yet we all feel very privileged to have known him in some way in his too-short stint on earth.

Peace to your family.

Although I never had the pleasure to meet Bill's family his stories around the campfire let me know he was a great father, grandfather, brother and friend. My condolences go out to Sherry and the rest of the family. Bill was a great mentor and a great friend. I learned more about hunting from him in a few conversations than I have from any other source. He'll be greatly missed by all of us from the Kifaru message boards and rendezvous.

Sherry and Family - While I'd never met Bill, his posts on an Internet hunting forum that we both frequented always brightened my day. Bill was a shining example of what a man ought to be, and the world is truly worse off now that he's passed. Take comfort in the fact that Bill positively touched many lives during his short time with us. Bill and your family are in my prayers.

It is hard to find the right words to say at such a difficult time. I knew Bill as a great husband to Sherry, a lovingly involved father and a very caring, doting grandfather. Apparently he has touched a lot of people during his time on this earth. I have read the blogs on the Internet that speak of his writing talents and how many readers he has touched. I am thinking of his dear family and friends at this sad time. Bill was a very good man...and his reach stretched further than many of us could imagine.

Few have the ability to affect the lives of virtually everyone who crosses their path — to truly inspire and to lead by example. Bill Krenz was such a man; a man of seemingly endless knowledge who always took time to listen first, and then to share timely insight with character, class and precision. He was the most patient, professional and positive man I ever met. Even in the most stressful times, I can’t recall him ever raising his voice. He looked for the good in everything and everyone, and was quick to highlight their finest attributes. Those blessed to know him well, to share time and experiences with him, benefited on countless levels. As he was to many, Bill was my mentor and a trusted confidant. He guided me down new and exciting paths and inspired me to develop talents that I never even knew I possessed. I, as are countless others, am a better man for having crossed paths with Bill Krenz. His impact was immeasurable, and his mark — indelible.

We will all miss you Bill.

I had the honor and pleasure of being Bill's secretary for 4 years at Bear Archery. He was the most patient, understanding, appreciative, considerate boss I have ever worked for and with in my 37 years of service.
We were all very fortunate.

One can write volumes about the attributes of Bill Krenz, but the simple fact is that he was a wonderful person and a nice guy. When you met Bill, you got a smile. It was contagious. We are all better people for knowing Bill and Sherry. I know I am. I will miss you my friend.

Bill put me on the right path to a career in the archery industry. When I began to loose sight of that path he demanded I become a better person. He somehow knew exactly what I needed and was generous enough to give his time and voice to a no name punk kid from Depoe Bay, Oregon. I remain indebted to a good man with great wisdom and a writing style that inspired obtainable dreams. I am truly blessed to have known him.

Sherry and Family,
We have never met, but I knew Bill prior to his leaving the Mountains of California when he still managed the Bow Hut in Mammoth, and was part of the Big Game Committee for California Bowmen Hunters our state organization. At which time I served as California's IBEP/NBEF Chairman for several years. Bill was one great gentleman in addition to his being an archer/bowhunter in love with the outdoors. Our paths did not cross often, but each time they did it was a Blessing for me as well as what ever our projects were.
Know that one day we will meet again in God's wonderful Heaven the Bible so promises to all who believe. My memories of Bill will always be at the top of my list of great servants. Pray that all of his family feel the love he gave this world.
God Bless you all;

December 16, 2010

My Condolences to your family, along with his many friends, on the loss of Bill. I first met Bill at the PBS meeting held in Grand Junction many years ago and have enjoyed his articles and photos longer than I have personaly known him. A year ago while working out the details with Bill on him obtaining a Bear bow I owned, Bill and I exchanged stories of our youth/growing up and passion for archery and our love of the Outdoor world...I want to Thank you as his Wife and Family, for sharing your Husband and Father with the rest of us. We as his friends are better people for having known him. Bill is/was truly a good man...when this life is all over and done, I only hope the same can be said for the majority of us he impacted...Rest Well Bowhunter...

Sherry , family and friends, my deepest and sincere condolences. I have enjoyed reading Bill's articles stretching many years. Only in the last year had I gotten to know him on a more personal basis through bow collecting. He was fair, honest and quick to answer my questions which I came to rely on. A bow that was once his is proudly displayed in my collection and for that I'm very thankful. Each time that I look at it I will think of Bill and all that I have learned from him.

Bill Krenz will be remembered---not for what he did... although he did much. Bill always put the spotlight on others and promoted archery 24/7. He will be missed. RIP Bill.

Frank Addington, Jr.

My first contact with Bill Krenz came when he directed the Hoyt pro staff under Joe Johnston at Hoyt/Easton in the late 1980's or early 1990's. Bill was tough--he required us to write quarterly reports, and an extensive end of the year report. This started a habit I've had every year... and continue to do--the end of the year reports. Little did I know Bill was getting valuable feedback on the gear we used, as well as seeing what our activities were, etc. He was always ahead of his time. He left Hoyt to take the reigns at Bear Archery. Bill was well liked and respected in the archery industry. He and his wife Sherry would both start "Inside Archery" and later "Bowhunt America", two successful magazines. Bill will be remembered for all he did to promote archery, for always being a straight shooter, and for being "one of the good guys." He was also a family man and successful bowhunter. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sherry and the family and close friends.

No need to worry about Bill, he's sitting around a campfire in Heaven with Fred Bear, Earl and Ann Hoyt, Rev. Stacy Groscup, Glenn St. Charles, and our other archery legends. Chances are he's taking notes to write a good column about their adventures... Bill's style was to always put the spotlight on others. He'll be missed. RIP Bill...
