BILLIE JEAN MELTON
Billie Jean Melton passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on March 3, 2013 in Lubbock, TX at her new home "The Porch Swing" under the care of Carolyn and Scott Herron. Her daughter Sharon was at her side as well as the thoughts and prayers of all her family during the final hour.
Jean was born to Bill and Clara Grayson on March 11, 1929 in Merkel, TX. She was raised in Merkel and attended the Merkel schools. She met her husband, D. R. (Slim) Melton in July 1945 while he was on military leave from his unit. They were married in Abilene, TX on December 3, 1945. They lived in Kermit for 45 years and moved to Odessa in 1991. They enjoyed 63 years together before he went to meet his Lord on December 19, 2008. He was the love of her life, and she missed him terribly. It brings great joy to know they are reunited in Heaven.
She was baptized into the Church of Christ at the young age of 11 years and served her Lord faithfully throughout her life. She was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ in Kermit for 45 years where she taught Bible classes. She was greatly involved in all types of charity work. She was a member of the American Cancer Society in both Winkler and Ector counties, served as secretary of the American Cancer Network, a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Post #4372, a member of the Parkinson's Disease Support group of Odessa, served on the board of directors of the Permian High School football booster club, and a member of the Permian High School baseball booster club.
Jean was a warm, loving, beautiful person and to know her was to love her. She was a good example of the "Christian Woman." She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and would brag on them to anyone who would listen. She loved God, family and country in that order. She loved to cook for her family and would spend days preparing for a family gathering. Billie Jean was loved and respected by all who know her and will be greatly missed.
She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother, & great-grandmother. She is survived by her three children, Mike Melton & wife Judy of Henderson, Sharon Hale & husband Dan of Lubbock, & Karen Shelton & husband Bill of Odessa. The real joys of her life were her eight grandchildren, in order of birth; Amy Janeke & husband Erik, Shane Melton & wife Abbie, Amanda Hale & Kevin Christy McElyea & husband Dale, Alanna Blu, Cody Parker & wife Amy, Logan Parker & wife Mary, & William Shelton. The grandchildren all called her different names, Gran, Grannie, Grannie Jean, Dean & CC, and Slim called her "Blue Eyes."
Jean is also survived by ten great grandchildren, Uriah, Islah, Asher, Arabella, & Lily Blu, Dayton & Dalton McElyea, Macie & Porter Melton, & Magen Parker. There will be two more additions between now and May. Brother & sister-in-laws, Doyle & Nancy Melton, Bob & Pat Williams, Del McNall, T.C. & Francis Melton, & Benny Melton. She also leaves an aunt Leola Pence & her daughter, Glenda Lou Clemens, & many nieces & nephews of the Click family that she loved dearly.
Preceded in death in addition to her husband Denzel (Slim), her mother, Clara Click, grandparents, Mama & Papa Marshal, & brothers, Raymond and Dale Click.
The family will receive visitors Tuesday evening 6 to 8 p.m. at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the 6th & Jackson Church of Christ with her oldest grandson, Shane Melton officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Shane, Cody & Logan Parker, William Shelton, great-grandson, Uriah Blu, and nephew, Steve Click.
