BILLY MAC NEWBERRY, passed away at his Sugar Land home in the company of his family on March 16, 2014, at the age of 66. Bill was born on May 27, 1947, in Cedar Hill, Tennessee, to Herman & Gladys Newberry. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served aboard the USS America and was a member of the US Navy's Strike Fighter Squadron 82 and Helicopter Attack Squadron 3. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Tennessee in 1976. Following a co-op at NASA where he received a Wernher von Braun Suggestion Award, Bill began work as a field engineer with Schlumberger in Shreveport, Louisiana. He remained with Schlumberger for the rest of his career, over thirty years, holding a variety of positions across Texas, notably in data interpretation and application engineering. He was recognized as an expert in geologic image processing and interpretation and holds a patent on methods for determining permeability of carbonates from geologic imaging and wireline logs. He was an avid world traveler and accomplished cook. Bill's family and friends were always his chief source of joy and pride in life. He is survived by Rose, his wife of thirty years; his sons, Robert and Benjamin; and his brother Dewey.

I have thought often about Bill since his passing. If I were to recount a tiny fraction of the fond memories I have of Bill, I would be writing until tomorrow. He often made me laugh. Sometimes he perplexed me, and sometimes he called me out when I became pretentious. I think most of his steady friendship through good times and times of difficulty. What more can I say than that he was a true friend that I shall remember always while I have life and breath, and if another life awaits us beyond the present, I'm certain Bill will be waiting for me.

Rose, Kathy and I are so sad to hear about Bill's passing. He was an open-hearted, quiet, complex man, a loyal friend through many tough college days. Thank you for sharing the photos of the family; we could see how happy Bill was in those pictures. Seeing that shy smile of his brought back many good memories.
All our love, to you and the boys.

Rose, I have not the words to express the depth of my compassion and sorrow for the loss of Bill. You, Robert, Benjamin, and your entire extended family are in my thoughts and prayers. I have regarded Bill as my friend from the first time I met him early in September 1965. Friends like Bill are a rare occurrence. I consider it an honor that Bill regarded me as a friend. Though it has been years since I last saw him my memory of him is still fresh, and I shall never forget his smile, his wit, and his gentle companionship.
