Bonnie died peacefully on June 26th at Windsor Gardens Rehabilitation Center of Salinas from a recent fall complicated by advanced Alzheimer's Disease. She was 94 years old.
Bonnie Lou Battley was born on June 7, 1920 in Columbus, Georgia. She was one of three children and the only daughter born to Joseph and Ethyl Battley.
Bonnie grew up in the Columbus area and after finishing high school, worked at the Nehi Corporation. She also took courses in business to prepare her for a secretarial job.
It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Alvin Mendonsa, who was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. They dated for two months and were married on March 17, 1945.
Bonnie and Al moved to the Monterey Peninsula shortly after that, and fell in love with the area. In 1947, their daughter Lynette was born, and their son, Larry, followed in 1949.
Bonnie doted on her children, and stayed at home to care for them while Al was teaching music in the Monterey area schools. They moved to Del Rey Oaks and as the children got older, she went to work at the Del Rey Oaks City Hall, serving as the Deputy City Clerk until 1957.
Bonnie later became employed in the Monterey school district, first working at La Mesa elementary and then the Board of Education. She later worked at Fremont Junior High School and then back to the Board of Education where she was an assistant and secretary/stenographer II. She retired from there in 1976.
As she went through life, one of her biggest pleasures was entertaining. Whether the gathering was small or large, she loved putting it together, and always loved making everyone feel welcome and comfortable. In her younger days, she also loved bowling and playing cards. Her and Al also enjoyed going to Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Carson City, Nevada. As time went on, she enjoyed reading books, listening to music, and doing crossword puzzles. She could outdo anyone on one of her puzzles.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Alvin Mendonsa, her father, Joseph Battley, her mother, Ethyl Battley, and her brothers, Wilbur and Marion Battley.
Bonnie is survived by her daughter, Lynette Bates (Larry) of Salinas, CA, and her son, Larry Mendonsa (Cathleen) of Seaside, CA. She leaves behind three grandchildren-Alan, Chris, and Carrie, and four great-grandchildren-Joslyn, Walker, Dilan, and Logan.
Private services will be held on Thursday, July 3rd, at Little Chapel by the Sea in Pacific Grove, 65 Asilomar Blvd, at 11:00am. The family is requesting, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the , Northern California and Northern Nevada, 1060 La Avenida Street, Mountain View, CA 94043.
