Brandy was born in the original 'hood, Brooklyn, New York, and had a self-described happy childhood, enjoying her big city life to the fullest. At the age of 17, she began working in the Catskills as a camp counselor and lifeguard for several successive summer sessions. It was there that she first met three young women with whom she remained lifelong friends. After graduating high school, Brandy completed her undergraduate education at New York State and received a Master's degree from Hunter College Graduate School of Social Work in New York City.

Brandy traveled to Israel in 1973 and worked on Kibbutz Bet-Zera. She had very fond memories of that time of her life and was one of the few women amongst her peers who could (and did) say that she knew how to operate an Uzi. Brandy initially made a home in Brooklyn, but after visiting a good friend in San Francisco, immigrated to the Monterey Peninsula where she raised her two children, Zahava and Arieh, in Carmel Valley.

Brandy was a licensed master of social work and devoted much of her career to hospice patients and their families. Brandy also worked with crime victims in Monterey County, The Alliance on Aging, and dialysis patients. Most recently, she joined a team of professionals that provide critical incident stress management assistance in Monterey County. Brandy was the consummate professional, but could also serve in her capacity while wearing a red clown nose and bring laughter to just about any situation. She was a talented teacher as well, and served as the principal of the Hebrew and Sunday school programs at Congregation Beth Israel in Carmel for many years, recently returning as an instructor.

Brandy was a dependable, compassionate, and authentic friend to many, although she was known to say that she liked dogs better than people. Brandy gave of herself (and her advice) freely and she was usually right.

Always a caretaker, Brandy rescued tortoises and turtles on a regular basis, and acquired one of the great delights of her life, "Luna", a street dog from Mexico who became her constant companion. The true loves of her life, however, were without question her children, Zahava and Arieh, of whom she was extremely proud and brought her great joy.

Brandy is survived by her mother, Joan Perlowitz, her sister,Wendy Artavia (Louis), her nephew, Remy and her daughter, Zahava Abend. She was preceded in death by her father, Simon Perlowitz, and her son, Arieh Abend. Many friends, patients, and their families, whose lives have been forever changed by her care and commitment to others, also survive Brandy.

One of Brandy's passions was world travel, and she enjoyed recent trips to China, Africa, and Mexico. Always planning a new trip, she was looking forward to her next adventure.

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference"

A memorial service will be held on March 11 at 6:00 PM at Congregation Beth Israel,
5716 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel, CA 93923.

Contributions in Brandy's memory may be made to the SPCA for Monterey County, 1002 Monterey Salinas Hwy, Salinas, CA,spcamc.org
