Obituary

Gordon Braxton Schuffert, 97, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 29, 2013 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at White Chapel Greenwood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 11:00 am at White Chapel Greenwood Funeral Home with Rev. Stan Holt officiating. Burial will follow in Montgomery Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Schuffert was born February 22, 1916 in Pelham, AL. He joined the Army in 1944 and served two years. Braxton worked for Hormel for 42 years and was a mason for 50 years. Mr. Schuffert was born February 22, 1916 in Pelham, AL. He joined the Army in 1944 and served two years. Braxton worked for Hormel for 42 years and was a mason for 50 years. He also was an avid musician, and at 12 years old learned to play the guitar. He met Hank Williams, Sr. when Hank was 14 years old. They formed a band and sang together for many years. Braxton was an original member of Hank's "Drifting Cowboys". Braxton's love for music landed him a recording contract with MGM. He also had his own radio program. Braxton was a longtime member of Trinity Memorial Baptist Church and loved his church family. He is survived by his son, John Allen Schuffert; daughter, Doris Davis; grandchildren, Allen Schuffert, John Andrew Schuffert, Beverly Davis and Harold Davis, Jr.; great grandchildren, Jeremy M. Davis, Vincent M. Davis, Braxton Chase Davis, Brandon Davis, Krystain Schuffert McKim and Krystal Schuffert. Pallbearers will be Allen Schuffert, Andy Schuffert, Harold Davis, Jeremy Davis, Vincent Davis and Joe Reeves. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Trinity Memorial Baptist Church, 2700 Old Selma Rd., Montgomery, AL 36108.
