Brett Conway Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2017.

Brett Patrick Conway, age 47, passed away at his home in Chicago on Saturday, June 18. He was born November 22, 1969 in Madison, WI to Stephen (Pat) Conway and Alma (Bonack) Conway. He was a 1988 graduate of Three Lakes High School, Three Lakes, WI. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison as an undergrad and went on to medical school at the same university. He graduated with an MD in 1997. He spent a year of residency in General Surgery at Loyola University Hospital followed by a 3 year residency in Anesthesia at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago. He became an Attending Physician in the Anesthesiology Department at Northwestern Memorial. During college he met Kelly Washburn and they were married September 6, 2003. Together they had three sons and lived in Chicago. Brett was also an integral part of Conway Theatres, a family business with movie theatres in Woodruff and Eagle River, WI.

Brett's most important thing in his life was his family. Together they spent many hours on their sailboat on Lake Michigan. He was also a baseball coach with WPPA, community baseball, in Chicago for 5+ years, coaching his boys' teams. Fondly known as Coach Brett, his fellow coaches expressed his passion for baseball and for teaching young players integrity, sportsmanship and hard work.

He always kept his love of the Northwoods, especially Three Lakes, in his heart and would travel north in all seasons to enjoy the beauty and peace he found here on the lakes and in the woods. In the fall he pursued his passion for duck hunting.
Brett is survived by his wife Kelly, his sons Jack (11), Ryan (9) and Luke (3), his parents Alma and Steve (Pat) Conway, his brother Chad and his inlaws, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday June 23 from 5:00-8:00 PM at Drake & Son Funeral Home, 5303 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St Benedicts Catholic Church, 2215 W. Irving Park Rd, Chicago, IL on Saturday June 24 at 10:00 AM.
Internment will be in the Three Lakes Cemetery, Three Lakes WI following a service led by Father Allam on Monday June 26 at 11:00 AM at the cemetery.

Deepest sympathy to Kelly, the boys, and the rest of the family. I just found out the terrible, shocking news. Brett and I lost touch the last several years, but he was always in my thoughts. Brett and I went through residency together at Northwestern. I have never met a finer, more decent or kinder human being. Brett always made me smile and laugh even in the toughest of times. Brett will be missed, but never forgotten.

We are heartbroken for you, Steve and Alma, for Chad and for Kelly. But mostly for Brett's beautiful little boys, Jack, Ryan and Luke. Brett was an adorable boy and a wonderful man. We loved him like our own. We hope and pray God will give you a sense of peace. We were all blessed to have had him in our lives. Dennis & Barbara Ruebel

Our deepest sympathies to the Conway family. I had the privilege of calling Brett a friend since kindergarten and he was our best man at our wedding. There has never been a more genuine, sweet, caring man. We spoke of him often. I think of him every time i make a recipe as his mother's wild rice recipe that he shared with us (along with the duck and trout he harvested) is the very first one when I open the box and it always makes me smile. I never could figure out how he and my husband became so close when they were such opposites. Our biggest regret was losing touch with him and not getting to know his wife and kids. We just always thought we'd have time once life settled down. I guess we will have to wait a little longer than we expected before we share another campfire. Anyone to have known Brett was blessed. I am certain no better husband, father or son ever existed.
